Horsepasture is a census-designated place (CDP) in Henry County, Virginia, United States. The population was 2,227 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Martinsville Micropolitan Statistical Area. Geography Horsepasture is located at (36.626394, −79.940695). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 9.6 square miles (25.0 km2), of which, 9.6 square miles (24.9 km2) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km2) of it (0.31%) is water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 2,255 people, 957 households, and 673 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 234.3 people per square mile (90.5/km2). There were 1,021 housing units at an average density of 106.1/sq mi (41.0/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 70.16% White, 27.98% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.18% Asian, and 1.37% from two or more races. Jimmy Hensley
James Hensley (born October 11, 1945) is a former NASCAR driver. With a career spanning 27 seasons in all three of NASCAR's elite divisions, Hensley may be best remembered for his Rookie of the Year award won in 1992, his 15th season in the series, and for his nine career Busch Series wins. He spent most of his career working as an oil truck driver in addition to racing. He was best known as being a substitute driver for many teams. Early career Hensley's NASCAR career began in 1972, driving for famous owner Junie Donlavey in the No. 90 Ford. Both of his starts that season came at Martinsville Speedway, the track being just ten miles from Hensley's hometown of Ridgeway, VA. Ada Jessamine Shumate (born on March 31, 1902, as Ada Jessamine White in Horsepasture, Virginia – died on December 16, 1990, in Greenville, North Carolina) was an American artist, historian and cartographer, winner of the "Award of Distinction" in 1955 from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Work Jessamine Shumate worked within a number of different styles and media during her career. "Her work covers a broad range of media including silk screen-printing, pastel, transparent and opaque water color, oil, collage, batik and serigraph. Some of her techniques involve oil and the use of a blowtorch. She uses her serigraphs and silk screens as part of her collage work. Mrs. Shumate also makes photographic prints of her original work."
