Horsegirl (band)
Horsegirl is an American rock band from Chicago, Illinois. The band members are Nora Cheng, Penelope Lowenstein, and Gigi Reece. The group is currently signed to Matador Records. Biography The group originated in 2019 and they self-released their first song, "Forecast", that year. The group released their first EP, ''Horsegirl: Ballroom Dance Scene et cetera'', through Sonic Cathedral Recordings in 2020. '' Paste'' named the EP one of the 25 best EP's of 2020. In November 2021, the group released another song, "Billy", their first on Matador Records. The song was named one of ''Rolling Stone''s "Songs You Need to Know". Alongside the song, the group released a cover of Minutemen's song "History Lesson – Part II". On June 3, 2022, the band released their debut album, ''Versions of Modern Performance,'' via Matador. History Lesson – Part II
"History Lesson – Part II" is a song from the 1984 album ''Double Nickels on the Dime'' by the American rock band Minutemen. The song, written by Mike Watt, is about the relationship of singer D. Boon and Watt as they played music together. The song is subtitled "Part II" as an earlier Minutemen composition titled "History Lesson" was included on their 1981 release, ''The Punch Line''. Watt claims he wrote the song to humanize themselves. Lyrics The song was penned by Watt and, as such, makes specific reference to Boon in the third person ("me and D. Boon, we played for years"). However, when the song was recorded, Boon performed lead vocals and changed the third person references to Watt ("me and Mike Watt, we played for years"). Matador Records is an independent record label, with a roster of mainly indie rock, but also punk rock, experimental rock, alternative rock, and electronic acts. History Matador was created in 1989 by Chris Lombardi in his New York City apartment. Lombardi had brought the Austrian duo H.P. ''Versions of Modern Performance'' is the debut studio album by the American rock band Horsegirl. It was released on June 3, 2022 via Matador. Influences The group was influenced by Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, Stereolab and other 1990s indie bands while writing the album. Writing and recording The album was written while the members of Horsegirl were in high school and recorded during the summer of 2021 at Electrical Audio in Chicago, Illinois with John Agnello. Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth is credited for auxiliary percussion on "Billy" and Lee Ranaldo is credited for guitars on "Beautiful Song". Singles and promotion The first single, "Billy", was released on November 16, 2021. The album was announced on March 9, 2022 along with the single "Anti-glory". Minutemen (band)
Minutemen were an American punk rock band formed in San Pedro, California, in 1980. Composed of guitarist/vocalist D. Boon, bassist/vocalist Mike Watt, and drummer George Hurley, Minutemen recorded four albums and eight EPs before Boon's death in an automobile accident in 1985; the band broke up shortly thereafter.
