Horrie Garrick
Horace James Garrick (26 August 1918 – 6 April 1982) was an Australian politician. He was an Australian Labor Party member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1969 to 1977, representing the electorate of Batman. Garrick was born in Melbourne and educated at Hawthorn West Central School and Swinburne Technical College. He became a professional athlete and was at one stage state quarter-mile champion, before becoming a mechanical engineering draftsman and establishing his own manufacturing business. He was elected as a City of Collingwood councillor in 1957 and was mayor from 1960 to 1961 and from 1968 to 1969. Garrick was also a commissioner of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works from 1964 to 1963. Division Of Batman
The Division of Batman was an Australian Electoral Division in the state of Victoria. It took its name from John Batman, one of the founders of the city of Melbourne. The division was created in 1906, replacing the Division of Northern Melbourne, and was abolished in 2019 and replaced by the Division of Cooper. The division was located in Melbourne's northern suburbs. It covered an area of approximately from / in the north to in the south, with Merri Creek providing the vast majority of the western boundary and Darebin Creek, parts of Macleod and Plenty Road in Bundoora providing the eastern boundary. Bundoora is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, north-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Cities of Banyule, Darebin and Whittlesea local government areas. Bundoora recorded a population of 28,068 at the 2021 census. Bundoora is the headquarters of La Trobe University, Bundoora Campus. Preselection is the process by which a candidate is selected, usually by a political party, to contest an election for political office. It is also referred to as candidate selection. Sam Benson
Samuel James Benson, CBE (12 July 1909 – 26 July 1995) was an Australian politician. Born in Adelaide, he was educated in that city at St Peter's College. He became a wool-classer, then a seaman and Port Phillip pilot, earning the rank of ship's master in 1938. Benson joined the Royal Australian Navy during World War II, and commanded the . Having served as Mayor and Councillor on Williamstown City Council, he was elected to the Australian House of Representatives in 1962 as the Labor member for Batman, filling the vacancy formed by the death of Alan Bird. Benson was re-elected in 1963, but was expelled from the ALP in August 1966.
