Horopito Railway Station
Horopito was a station on the North Island Main Trunk line, in the Ruapehu District of New Zealand. It served the small village of Horopito and lies just to the north of two of the five largest NIMT viaducts. It and Pokaka also lay to the south of Makatote Viaduct, the late completion of which held up opening of the station. A passing loop remains at the station site. History Surveying for the route between Hīhītahi and Piriaka began in 1894. The line opened from Waiouru to Rangataua for goods traffic on 12 August 1907 and a mail coach ran between the railheads at Raurimu and Rangataua, serving Horopito on the way. A stationmaster was appointed by March 1908. A telephone line from the north was in place by 1907, but a link to Mataroa was not installed until 1909. The North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) is the main railway line in the North Island of New Zealand, connecting the capital city Wellington with the country's largest city, Auckland. The line is long, built to the New Zealand rail gauge of and serves the large cities of Palmerston North and Hamilton. Frederick Furkert
Frederick William Furkert (14 October 1876 – 26 September 1949) was a New Zealand engineer. He joined the Public Works Department (PWD) in 1894, and was engineer-in-chief of the PWD for twelve years from 1920 until he retired in 1933. Furkert was born in Ross, Westland in 1876. The projects he was responsible for included the New Zealand Railways Department the North Island Main Trunk Railway (completed 1908), the Otira Tunnel (completed 1923) and the Tawa Flat deviation (completed 1935). He was also responsible for hydroelectric dam projects like the Waitaki Dam (completed 1935). He worked with the Standards Institute on the draughting of building bylaws. In the 1926 New Year Honours, Furkert was appointed a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George. He was a Wellington City Councillor when he died. Peter Seton Hay
Peter Seton Hay (1852–19 March 1907) was a New Zealand civil engineer and public servant. He was born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland on 12 July 1852. He was brought to Dunedin in April 1860. In 1875, he joined the Public Works Department, as an engineering cadet, and was awarded a University of Otago BA in 1877 and an MA in 1878. He married Mary Clarke on 22 April 1879 and was survived by her, four sons and a daughter. Peter Seton Hay helped build parts of the Main South Line, Central Otago, Midland and Catlins River railways, before moving to the Wellington head office in 1884. Mount Ruapehu (; ) is an active stratovolcano at the southern end of the Taupō Volcanic Zone and North Island volcanic plateau in New Zealand. Raetihi Forest Fire
Raetihi Forest fire was a fire that occurred on the 19–20 March 1918 in and around the townships of Raetihi and Ohakune in the North Island of New Zealand. The great fire itself was a major catastrophe. It burned for two days, devastating areas of forest and almost destroying the townships of Raetihi and Ohakune. In addition to the great stands of Rimu and other large stands of podocarps in the North Island Volcanic Plateau of New Zealand, 150 houses and nine sawmills were lost. Three people died as a result of the fire when their farmhouse burned. There were reports that away in the capital Wellington, schools were closed and the skies were darkened with the amount of smoke in the air.
