Horgan Ministry
The Horgan ministry is the combined Cabinet (government), Cabinet (formally the Executive Council of British Columbia) that governed British Columbia from July 18, 2017, to November 18, 2022. It was chaired by the 36th premier of British Columbia, John Horgan. The Cabinet was made up of members of the British Columbia New Democratic Party (NDP), which commands a majority in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. The ministry replaced the Christy Clark Ministry, Christy Clark ministry following the aftermath of the 2017 British Columbia general election, 2017 general election. That election resulted in a hung parliament and the Clark ministry attempting to remain in office as a minority government; however, it was defeated by a motion of no confidence on June 29. John Horgan
John Joseph Horgan (born August 7, 1959) is a Canadian politician who served as the 36th premier of British Columbia from 2017 to 2022, and also as the leader of the British Columbia New Democratic Party from 2014 to 2022. Horgan has been the member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the constituency of Langford-Juan de Fuca and its predecessors since 2005. Horgan was born and raised in Victoria, British Columbia. In June 2006, he was appointed the Official Opposition critic for the Ministry of Energy and Mines in New Democrat leader Carole James' shadow cabinet, having previously served as the Official Opposition critic for the Ministry of Education. 2022 British Columbia New Democratic Party Leadership Election
In 2022, the British Columbia New Democratic Party (NDP) held a leadership election to select a new leader. The contest was prompted by John Horgan's announcement in June 2022 that he would step down as leader of the party once a new leader had been chosen. As the NDP has formed the government of the province since 2017, newly elected leader David Eby was subsequently sworn in as premier of British Columbia. The convention was scheduled to take place in the fourth quarter of 2022. Two candidates were in the contest: David Eby and Anjali Appadurai.
