Horatio Collins King
Horatio Collins King (December 22, 1837 – November 15, 1918) was a Union Army soldier who received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the American Civil War. He also served as a U.S. lawyer, politician and author. Biography Born in Portland, Maine, King graduated from Dickinson College in 1858, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in New York City in 1861. He served in the armies of the Potomac and Shenandoah during the Civil War from August 1862 until May 1865, when he resigned with the rank of brevet colonel. King earned the Medal of Honor for service near Dinwiddie Courthouse, Virginia, on March 31, 1865. King then practiced law until 1870, when he became connected with the press. The Army of the Potomac was the principal Union Army in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War. It was created in July 1861 shortly after the First Battle of Bull Run and was disbanded in June 1865 following the surrender of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia in April. William Sohmer
William Sohmer (May 26, 1852 in Dunningen, Kingdom of Württemberg – February 2, 1929 in Brooklyn, New York City) was an American politician. Life He came with his parents in 1858 to New York City where his elder brother Hugo Sohmer, Hugo founded Sohmer & Co. in 1872. His father was a physician and cared about a good education for his sons. In 1872, he entered the insurance business, and finally became President of the Niagara Fire Insurance Company. He was a member of the New York State Assembly (New York Co., 10th D.) in 113th New York State Legislature, 1890, 114th New York State Legislature, 1891 and 115th New York State Legislature, 1892. Afterwards he was appointed a Deputy Tax Commissioner. In 1894, he was defeated when running for Sheriff of New York County. The New York State Comptroller is an elected constitutional officer of the U.S. state of New York and head of the New York state government's Department of Audit and Control. The New York State Comptroller is the highest-paid state auditor or treasurer in the country. Sixty-one individuals have held the office of State Comptroller since statehood. Progressive Party (United States, 1912)
The Progressive Party was a third party in the United States formed in 1912 by former president Theodore Roosevelt after he lost the presidential nomination of the Republican Party to his former protégé rival, incumbent president William Howard Taft. The new party was known for taking advanced positions on progressive reforms and attracting leading national reformers. The party was also ideologically deeply connected with America's indigenous radical-liberal tradition. After the party's defeat in the 1912 presidential election, it went into rapid decline in elections until 1918, disappearing by 1920. John Palmer (1842–1905)
John Palmer (March 22, 1842 – April 15, 1905 in Albany, New York) was an American politician who served as Secretary of State of New York from 1894 to 1898. Early life Palmer was born in Stapleton, Staten Island, a son of John and Rebecca Palmer. His parents returned with him to England when Palmer was still a small child. Later he accompanied his seafaring grandfather, and witnessed the Siege of Sevastopol during the Crimean War from their freighter. When his parents returned to the United States, settled in Bath-on-the-Hudson, New York, and opened a paint shop, Palmer joined them and became a house painter.
