Horace Webster Farmhouse
The Horace Webster Farmhouse is a historic house at 577 South End Road in Southington, Connecticut. Built about 1837, it is the town's only surviving example of a three-bay Greek Revival house. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Description and history The Horace Webster Farmhouse is located in southeastern Southington, on the east side of South End Road just north of the Southington Country Club. It is a -story wood-frame structure, with a gabled roof and clapboarded exterior. It has a three bay front facade, with broad corner pilasters of the Doric order rising to an entablature and fully pedimented gable. A semi-oval window is set in the center of the gable. The main entrance is in the rightmost bay, sheltered by a hip-roof portico supported by fluted Doric columns. The door is framed by sidelight and transom windows with leaded lights. Southington is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, it had a population of 43,501. Southington contains the villages of Marion, Milldale, and Plantsville. Geography Southington is situated about southwest of Hartford, about northeast of New York City, southwest of Boston and west of Providence. It includes the areas of Plantsville, Marion and Milldale, each of which has its own post office and distinct architecture. The town rests in a valley of two mountains on its east and west sides. The town is located along exits 28 through 32 of Interstate 84, exit 4 of Interstate 691, and bisected by Connecticut Route 10. Southington has the nickname of "The Apple Valley", due to the many orchards that still dot its landscape. The Quinnipiac River flows through the town. Doric Order
The Doric order was one of the three orders of ancient Greek and later Roman architecture; the other two canonical orders were the Ionic and the Corinthian. The Doric is most easily recognized by the simple circular capitals at the top of columns. Originating in the western Doric region of Greece, it is the earliest and, in its essence, the simplest of the orders, though still with complex details in the entablature above. John Webster (governor)
John Webster (bef August 16, 1590 – April 5, 1661) was an early colonial settler of New England, serving one term as governor of the Colony of Connecticut in 1656. Early life Webster was born in Cossington, Leicestershire, England, the son of Matthew Webster (1548–1623) and his wife, Elizabeth Ashton. Career In the early 1630s, he traveled to the Massachusetts Bay Colony with his wife and five children, settling in the area of Newtowne (now Cambridge, Massachusetts). He left in 1636, in all probability with Thomas Hooker and his adherents, to settle Hartford, Connecticut. His first public office was as a member of a committee that joined with the Court of Magistrates in determining the course of war with the Pequot Indians. He was chosen from 1639 to 1655 to be magistrate, and in 1655 he was chosen as Deputy Governor of the Colony of Connecticut.
