Horace Tabberer Brown
Horace Tabberer Brown FRS (20 July 1848 – 6 February 1925) was a British chemist. Early life He was born after the death of his biological father so his stepfather was the only father he knew. The stepfather was a banker and amateur naturalist which led to Brown's interest in science, which began around age 12. His younger half brother was Adrian John Brown. Career He started work at the Worthington Brewery in 1866. His focus was to solve practical brewing problems by employing and developing fundamental scientific principles. His research work considered barley germination, beer microbiology, water composition, oxygen and fermentation, beer haze formation, wort composition and beer analysis. A true polymath, he left his mark on virtually all areas of science as applied to brewing, in a career which lasted over 50 years. John Simpson Ford FRSE (1866-17 March 1944) was a Scottish industrial chemist and microbiologist specialising in brewing who served as Technical Director of William Younger & Co. Scottish candidates for a Diploma in Brewing may apply for the J S Ford Award which is named in his honour. Life He was born in Edinburgh in 1866. He studied at the Roya High School then was articled as an apprentice in 1880 under the Public Analyst, Falconer King. Ernest Stanley Salmon
Ernest Stanley Salmon (1 June 1871 – 12 October 1959) was a British mycologist and plant pathologist best known for his work in breeding new varieties of hops. Salmon crossed a wild Manitoban hop with cultivated English stock to create hybrid C9''a'', which was released to commercial cultivation in 1934 as Brewer's Gold. Though the original wild hop died during the winter of 1918–19, Brewer's Gold has become the ancestor of nearly every new high-alpha hop variety released since then. Salmon was born in Richmond, Surrey, England, in 1871 and held a number of research and teaching positions through his life. He was a researcher at the Kew Gardens from 1899 to 1906 and at Wye College from 1906 to 1937. Henry Edward Armstrong
Henry Edward Armstrong FRS FRSE (Hon) (6 May 1848 – 13 July 1937) was a British chemist. Although Armstrong was active in many areas of scientific research, such as the chemistry of naphthalene derivatives, he is remembered today largely for his ideas and work on the teaching of science. Armstrong's acid is named for him. Life and work Armstrong was born the son of Richard Armstrong, a commission agent and importer, and Mary Ann Biddle. He lived most of his life in Lewisham, a suburb of London. After finishing school in 1864 at age 16, he spent a winter in Gibraltar, with a relative, for health reasons. The Chemical Society was a scientific society formed in 1841 (then named the Chemical Society of London) by 77 scientists as a result of increased interest in scientific matters.
