Horace L. Dibble House
The Horace L Dibble House was built ''circa'' 1859 in Molalla, Oregon for Horace Lasalle Dibble and his family. The house is unusual as a western example of a saltbox, a dwelling type more commonly associated with Colonial-era New England. The timber-framed house has two stories on the eastern main facade, and one story in the rear. It is unusual for a Settlement Era house to have such large rooms, large windows, and two fireplaces. Dibble was born in Madison County, New York in 1815 to Thomas and Ruth Gates Dibble. He married his wife Julia Ann Sturges in Van Buren County, Iowa in July 1845. In 1852, Horace, Julia, their three children, along with members of the Sturges family, traveled overland to Oregon and settled in the Needy area of the Willamette Valley. Molalla, Oregon
Molalla is a city in Clackamas County, Oregon. The population was 8,108 at the time of the 2010 census. History Molalla was named after the Molalla River, which in turn was named for the Molala, a Native American tribe that inhabited the area. William H. Vaughan took up a donation land claim in the area in 1844. Molalla post office was established in 1850, near the site of Liberal, and was discontinued in 1851. The post office was reestablished in 1868 and it ran until 1874, then was reestablished in 1876, which is when it was probably placed at the present location of Molalla. Since the late 1990s, the city experienced a surge in growth and expansion in the residential sector. In 2000, a number of franchised business have located in Molalla. In 2002, Molalla installed its first stoplight at the intersection of Oregon Route 211 and Oregon Route 213 because of the traffic brought by the increased business activity. Saltbox
A saltbox house is a gable-roofed residential structure that is typically two stories in the front and one in the rear. It is a traditional New England style of home, originally timber framed, which takes its name from its resemblance to a wooden lidded box in which salt was once kept. The structure's unequal sides and long, low rear roofline are its most distinctive features. A flat front and central chimney are also recognizable traits. Origins The saltbox originated in New England and is an example of American colonial architecture. Its shape evolved organically as an economical way to enlarge a house by adding a shed to a home's rear. Original hand-riven oak clapboards are still in place on some of the earliest New England saltboxes, such as the Comfort Starr House and Ephraim Hawley House. Fred Vonder Ahe House
The Fred Vonder Ahe House or Von der Ahe House was built in 1869 in the small community of Carus, Oregon, near Molalla for German immigrant Fred Vonder Ahe and his wife Marie Louisa Kleine Vonder Ahe. Fred arrived in New York in 1852 and followed the Oregon Trail to Oregon. He saved enough to acquire a farm in 1857, and sent for his fiancé Marie to join him in 1858. In 1887 the house became the Carus post office, as it was the oldest and most significant house in the community. In 1972 the house was under threat of demolition. It was acquired by the Molalla Area Historical Society and moved to a site in Molalla next to the Horace L. Dibble House.
