Horace Billings Packer
Horace Billings Packer (October 11, 1851 – April 13, 1940) was a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Formative years Horace B. Packer was born in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania on October 11, 1851. He attended the common schools, the Wellsboro Academy, and Alfred University in Alfred, New York. Career Packer studied law, and was admitted to the bar of Tioga County, Pennsylvania, in 1873 and commenced practice in Wellsboro. He was also engaged in the real estate business. District attorney of Tioga County from 1875 to 1879, Packer was then elected to the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives in 1884 and reelected in 1886. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate from 1888 to 1892. He also served for many years as a member of the borough council, and presided over the Republican State conventions of 1893 and 1894. Quintus Horatius Flaccus (; 8 December 65 – 27 November 8 BC), known in the English-speaking world as Horace (), was the leading Roman lyric poet during the time of Augustus (also known as Octavian). The rhetorician Quintilian regarded his ''Odes'' as just about the only Latin lyrics worth reading: "He can be lofty sometimes, yet he is also full of charm and grace, versatile in his figures, and felicitously daring in his choice of words."Quintilian 10.1.96. The only other lyrical poet Quintilian thought comparable with Horace was the now obscure poet/metrical theorist, Caesius Bassus (R. The 56th United States Congress was a meeting of the legislative branch of the United States federal government, composed of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives. It met in Washington, D.C. from March 4, 1899, to March 4, 1901, during the third and fourth years of William McKinley's presidency. The apportionment of seats in this House of Representatives was based on the Eleventh Census of the United States in 1890. Both chambers had a Republican majority. Elias Deemer
Elias Deemer (January 3, 1838 – March 29, 1918) was a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Biography Elias Deemer was born near Durham, Pennsylvania. He was engaged in the mercantile business in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania and in Philadelphia in 1860. During the Civil War, he enlisted in July 1861 as a private in Company E, One Hundred and Fourth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and served until the middle of May 1862, when he was discharged because of disabilities. He moved to Milford, New Jersey, in 1862 and engaged in business. In 1868 moved to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and engaged in the manufacture of lumber. He served as president of the common council from 1888 to 1890. He was president of the Williamsport National Bank from 1893 to 1918, and also interested in the publication of several newspapers at Williamsport. The Republican Party, also referred to as the GOP ("Grand Old Party"), is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States. The GOP was founded in 1854 by anti-slavery activists who opposed the Kansas–Nebraska Act, which allowed for the potential expansion of chattel slavery into the western territories. Since Ronald Reagan's presidency in the 1980s, conservatism has been the dominant ideology of the GOP. It has been the main political rival of the Democratic Party since the mid-1850s.
