Hopkins Trophy
The Hopkins Trophy was an annual men's professional team golf competition between teams representing the United States and Canada. It was played from 1952 to 1956. The Americans won all five contests that were played. The matches were sponsored by John Jay Hopkins. Format The 1952 event was contested over two days with three 36-hole fourballs on the first day and six 36-hole singles on the final day. Each match involved three points, one for the morning round, one for the afternoon round and a third for the overall result. The 1953 event was extended to three days with three fourballs on the first day and six singles on the second and third days. Matches were reduced to 18 holes with one point for the winner of each 9 holes and a further point for the winner over all 18 holes. Match Play
Match play is a scoring system for golf in which a player, or team, earns a point for each hole in which they have bested their opponents; as opposed to stroke play, in which the total number of strokes is counted over one or more rounds of 18 holes. In match play the winner is the player, or team, with the most points at the end of play. Although most professional tournaments are played using the stroke play scoring system, there are, or have been, some exceptions, for example the WGC Match Play and the Volvo World Match Play Championship, and most team events, for example the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup, all of which are in match play format. Jerry Barber
Carl Jerome Barber (April 25, 1916 – September 23, 1994) was an American professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour. He had seven wins on tour, including a major title, the PGA Championship in 1961. Born in Woodson, Illinois, Barber was one of nine children raised on an Illinois farm near Jacksonville, and turned professional in 1942. Small in stature, he was one of the top putters of his era. Barber was a full-time member of the PGA Tour from 1948 to 1962. He played on two Ryder Cup teams, 1955 and 1961; and was also the team captain in 1961. Barber earned a living primarily as a club professional like most of the touring pros of his generation; he worked at Los Angeles' Wilshire Country Club. He was the Player of the Year on the PGA Tour in 1961, unseating Arnold Palmer for a year. Peter Thomson (golfer)
Peter William Thomson (23 August 1929 – 20 June 2018) was an Australian professional golfer. He won the Open Championship five times between 1954 and 1965. Thomson is the only golfer in the modern era to win a major three times in succession – The Open in 1954, 1955 and 1956. Life Thomson was born in Brunswick, a northern suburb of Melbourne, Australia. His Open Championship wins came in 1954, 1955, 1956, 1958, and 1965. He was the only man to win the tournament for three consecutive years in the 20th century. Henry Martell (August 3, 1806 – December 21, 1877) was a merchant and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Arichat Township from 1843 to 1859 and Richmond County from 1859 to 1863 in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly as a Reformer and later Conservative. He was born in Arichat, Nova Scotia Arichat is an unincorporated place in the Municipality of the County of Richmond, Nova Scotia, Canada. Arthur D'Arcy "Bobby" Locke (20 November 1917 – 9 March 1987) was a South African professional golfer. He is generally regarded as one of the greatest golfers of all time. He won The Open Championship four times and 15 PGA Tour events in total. Stan Leonard (February 2, 1915 – December 15, 2005) was a Canadian professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour in the 1950s and 1960s. Leonard won three PGA Tour events, eight Canadian PGA Championships, and 16 other events on the Canadian Tour. He is a member of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame. Early years Leonard was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. He worked as a caddie, and had success in top British Columbia events. Jack Kay (c. 1951 – January 30, 2015) was an American academic who was interim chancellor, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, and professor of communication at the University of Michigan-Flint. Prior to joining the University of Michigan-Flint in September 2005, Kay was associate provost for student services and professor of communication at Wayne State University. Jules Huot
Jules Huot (January 7, 1908 – February 2, 1999) was a French-Canadian professional golfer. Huot was born in Boischatel, Quebec and was the most successful member of a large golfing family, with brothers Rodolphe and Roland also enjoying provincial and national success. He served as the head professional at several golf clubs in Quebec, most notably at Kent Golf Club for almost 15 years and then at Le Club Laval-suc-le-lac, where he remained for 25 years until his retirement in 1970. Huot had a successful tournament career, highlighted by winning the General Brock Open on the PGA Tour – the first Canadian professional to win on the tour, and Canadian PGA Championship on three occasions, in 1934, 1939 and 1946.
