Hoots Mon! (1940 Film)
''Hoots Mon!'' is a 1940 British comedy film directed by Roy William Neill and starring Max Miller, Florence Desmond and Hal Walters. It follows an English comedian who attempts his luck on the Scottish stage, and develops a rivalry with a local performer. Miller sings " The Charabanc Song" and his signature tune " Mary from the Dairy". Production The film was produced at Teddington Studios by Warner Brothers' British subsidiary. To comply with the 1927 Films Act the company was obliged to distribute a number of British-made films each year, and during the 1930s the company produced a large quantity of films at Teddington. It was the ninth and final film that the music hall star Miller made for Warner Brothers. The film's sets were by Norman Arnold, the resident art director at Teddington. Roy William Neill
Roy William Neill (4 September 1887 – 14 December 1946) was an Irish-born American film director best known for directing the last eleven of the fourteen Sherlock Holmes films starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, made between 1943 and 1946 and released by Universal Studios. Biography With his father as the captain, Roy William Neill was born on a ship off the coast of Ireland. His birth name was Roland de Gostrie. Neill began directing silent films in 1917 and went on to helm 111 films, 55 of them silent. Although most of Neill's films were low-budget B-movies, he was known for directing films with meticulously lit scenes with carefully layered shadows that would become the style of ''film noir'' in the late 1940s. It received Royal Assent on 20 December 1927 and came into force on 1 April 1928. Mark Daly (23 August 1887 – 27 September 1957) was a British film actor. Daly was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on 23 August 1887, making his first stage appearance in Swansea, Wales, in 1906. Six years later, in 1912, he made his first London stage appearance at the Shaftesbury Theatre. For three years, he was the principal comedian at The Fred Karno Company, a collection of comedians who worked in both British variety and American vaudeville. Other "Karno Comedians" included Charlie Chaplin and Billie Ritchie. During his time as an actor, Daly took part in excess of 25 motion pictures before his death on 27 September 1957 in England. Garry Marsh
Garry Marsh (21 June 1902 – 6 March 1981) was an English stage and film actor. Born Leslie Marsh Gerahty in St Margarets, Surrey, his parents were George and Laura. His elder brothers were the author Digby George Gerahty and the journalist Cecil Gerahty. Marsh began acting on the stage at the age of fifteen.
