The ''Hoosier State'' was a passenger train service operated by Amtrak between Chicago and Indianapolis Indianapolis (), colloquially known as Indy, is the state capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Indiana and the seat of Marion County. Shelby, Indiana
Shelby is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Cedar Creek Township, Lake County, Indiana. Shelby had a population of 539 at the 2010 census. History Shelby was laid out and platted in 1886 by William R. Shelby, when the railroad was extended to that point. Geography Shelby lies in the southeast corner of Cedar Creek Township, bordered to the south by the Kankakee River, which forms the Newton County line. Directly across the river is the unincorporated community of Thayer. Shelby is southeast of Lowell, east of Schneider and west of DeMotte. Indiana State Road 55 crosses the Kankakee River at Shelby, making one of the few Kanakee River crossings from Lake County. Shelby, along other small Kankakee River communities, has historically had to contend with periodic flooding from the Kankakee River. Hoosier is the official demonym for the people of the U.S. state of Indiana. The origin of the term remains a matter of debate, but "Hoosier" was in general use by the 1840s, having been popularized by Richmond resident John Finley's 1833 poem "The Hoosier's Nest". Anyone born in Indiana or a resident at the time is considered to be a Hoosier. Indiana adopted the nickname "The Hoosier State" more than 150 years ago. "Hoosier" is used in the names of numerous Indiana-based businesses and organizations. "Hoosiers" is also the name of the Indiana University athletic teams. As there is no accepted embodiment of a Hoosier, the IU schools are represented through their letters and colors alone. Beech Grove is a city in Marion County, Indiana, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city's population is 14,192. The city is located within the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Beech Grove is designated an "excluded city" under Indiana law, as it is not part of the consolidated government of Indianapolis and Marion County. Beech Grove Shops
The Beech Grove Shops is a railway maintenance facility in Beech Grove, Indiana, outside Indianapolis. Beech Grove is Amtrak's primary maintenance facility. It also contains a very large freight yard. History The shops were originally constructed in 1904–1908 by the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St Louis Railway (the "Big Four"), servicing a network stretching across the Midwest into Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. The facility was used as the company's repair shop for steam locomotives and passenger and freight cars. The Big Four was acquired by the New York Central Railroad (NYC) in 1906, but operated as an independent business until it was formally merged with its owner in 1922. The facility passed to Penn Central Transportation in 1968 when the NYC merged with the Pennsylvania Railroad. Penn Central declared bankruptcy in 1970. The ''National Limited'' was a passenger train that ran between Kansas City, Missouri, and both New York City and Washington, D.C., splitting in Pennsylvania. Amtrak operated the train from 1971 to 1979. History In 1970, the Department of Transportation, in its designation of endpoints for the Amtrak system, designated a train to run between New York, Washington and St. Louis. This was later amended to run all the way to Kansas City, with a connection to the ''Super Chief'' running between Chicago and Los Angeles. The route was being served, prior to Amtrak, by the ''Spirit of St. Louis'', originally run by the Pennsylvania Railroad and later inherited by Penn Central. The ''South Wind'' was a named passenger train equipped and operated jointly by the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (later Seaboard Coast Line), and the Florida East Coast Railway. The ''South Wind'' began operations in December 1940, providing streamliner service between Chicago, Illinois and Miami, Florida. This was one of three new seven-car, all-coach streamliners operating in coordination every third day along different routes between Chicago and Miami. The ''Hoosier'' was a passenger train operated by the Chicago, Indianapolis and Louisville Railway (Monon) between Chicago, Illinois, and Indianapolis, Indiana. It operated from 1911 to 1959. A Hoosier is a resident of the state of Indiana. History The train was inaugurated in 1911 as the ''Hoosier Limited'' and was intended as the premier service of the Monon Railroad. New Barney and Smith cars were acquired for the service. In April 1914 the trains name was shortened to simply the ''Hoosier''. The train's consist featured an elaborate dining car and observation car. Unique among the Monon's passenger trains, the ''Hoosier'' retained its name through World War I. Twice-daily service was suspended through World War II, but was restored in 1946. The service was streamlined starting on August 17, 1947, with full conversion completed that November. The Monon Railroad , also known as the Chicago, Indianapolis, and Louisville Railway from 1897 to 1971, was an American railroad that operated almost entirely within the state of Indiana.
