Hoosier State (passenger Train)
The ''Hoosier State'' was a passenger train service operated by Amtrak between Chicago and Indianapolis. It ran on the four days each week that the ''Cardinal'' did not run, giving daily rail service to the Chicago–Indianapolis corridor. The ''Cardinal'' continues to provide three round trips per week between Chicago and Indianapolis. History Prior service Prior to Amtrak, the Chicago–Indianapolis market was served by several daily trains, the Pennsylvania Railroad's ''South Wind'' and ''Kentuckian'', and the New York Central's ''James Whitcomb Riley'', ''Indianapolis Special'', and ''Sycamore''. Hoosier State Street Running In Lafayette, September 1990
Hoosier is the official demonym for the people of the U.S. state of Indiana. The origin of the term remains a matter of debate, but "Hoosier" was in general use by the 1840s, having been popularized by Richmond resident John Finley's 1833 poem "The Hoosier's Nest". Anyone born in Indiana or a resident at the time is considered to be a Hoosier. Indiana adopted the nickname "The Hoosier State" more than 150 years ago. "Hoosier" is used in the names of numerous Indiana-based businesses and organizations. "Hoosiers" is also the name of the Indiana University athletic teams. As there is no accepted embodiment of a Hoosier, the IU schools are represented through their letters and colors alone. In addition to universal acceptance by residents of Indiana, the term is also the official demonym according to the U.S. Government Publishing Office. Origin In addition to "The Hoosier's Nest", the term also appeared in the ''Indianapolis Journal'''s "Carrier's Address" on January 1, 1833. Ther ...

National Limited (Amtrak Train)
The ''National Limited'' was a passenger train that ran between Kansas City, Missouri, and both New York City and Washington, D.C., splitting in Pennsylvania. Amtrak operated the train from 1971 to 1979. History In 1970, the Department of Transportation, in its designation of endpoints for the Amtrak system, designated a train to run between New York, Washington and St. Louis. This was later amended to run all the way to Kansas City, with a connection to the ''Super Chief'' running between Chicago and Los Angeles. The route was being served, prior to Amtrak, by the ''Spirit of St. Louis'', originally run by the Pennsylvania Railroad and later inherited by Penn Central. Amtrak initially retained the ''Spirit of St. Louis'', extending it to Kansas City along the Missouri Pacific Railroad. In July 1971, the train was renamed the ''National Limited'' to better reflect the scope of the route. That name had been used by another New York-St. Louis train operated by the Baltimore a ...

The new company failed barely two years after formation, the largest bankruptcy in U.S. history at the time. The Penn Central's railroad assets were nationalized into Conrail along with the other bankrupt northeastern roads; its real estate and insurance holdings successfully reorganized into American Premier Underwriters. History Pre-merger The Penn Central railroad system developed in response to challenges facing northeastern American railroads during the late 1960s. While railroads elsewhere in North America drew revenues from long-distance shipments of commodities suc ...
