The Hoogovens Wijk aan Zee Steel Chess Tournament 1999 was the 61st edition of the Hoogovens Wijk aan Zee Chess Tournament. It was held in Wijk aan Zee in January 1999 and was won by world number one Garry Kasparov. Kasparov, entering for the first time, finished half a point ahead of 1998 champion Viswanathan Anand, and whose final tally of 10 points included a seven-game winning streak, described the event as "by far the best tournament in my life" and stated that his preparation was the strongest it had ever been due to computers. Wijk Aan Zee
Wijk aan Zee ( literally ''Neighborhood at Sea'') is a village on the coast of the North Sea in the municipality of Beverwijk, the province of North Holland of the Netherlands. The prestigious Tata Steel Chess Tournament (formerly called the Corus chess tournament or the Hoogovens tournament) takes place there every year. Due to its seaside location, Wijk aan Zee has become a popular destination among tourists. This is reflected in the village economy, which consists to a large extent of bars and hotels. Vasyl Mykhaylovych Ivanchuk ( uk, Василь Михайлович Іванчук; born March 18, 1969), also transliterated as Vassily Ivanchuk, is a Ukrainian chess player. He was awarded the title of International Grandmaster, Grandmaster by FIDE in 1988. Friso Nijboer (born May 26, 1965) is a Dutch chess player. He achieved the title of Grandmaster in 1996. Nijboer won the Vlissingen Chess Tournament in 2002 and 2005, and won the 3rd Nancy Chess Festival in 2005. Igor Glek
Igor Vladimirovich Glek (russian: Игорь Владимирович Глек; born 7 November 1961) is a Russian chess player, trainer, writer and theorist. He was awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE in 1990. Glek was born in Moscow. Completing his University of Moscow engineering/economics qualification in 1983, he worked as an economist until 1986 and followed this with two years of military service in the Soviet Army. From 1989, he was able to concentrate on chess, becoming first a professional player, then a grandmaster in 1990. In 1994 he moved to Essen, Germany. Van der Wiel in 1983, thumb John van der Wiel (born 9 August 1959) is a Dutch chess grandmaster. He is a two-time Dutch Chess Champion. Chess career Born in 1959, Van der Wiel won the ''Daniël Noteboom tournament'' in Leiden in 1976 and 1977. He won the European Junior Chess Championship in 1978, and was awarded the Grandmaster title in 1982. He won the Dutch Chess Championship in 1984 and 1986. He was between 1979 and 2004 playing in this championship for 26 consecutive times. Besides winning two times, he became nine times second. Rafael Duailibe Leitão (born 28 December 1979) is a Brazilian chess player. He is a grandmaster in both over-the-board chess and correspondence chess. Leitão is a seven-time Brazilian champion. He competed in the FIDE World Championship in 1999, 2000 and 2004 and in the FIDE World Cup in 2005, 2007, 2009, 2013 and 2015. Chess career Leitão won the World Youth Chess Championship in the U12 category in 1991 and in the U18 category in 1996. Smbat Gariginovich Lputian (sometimes transliterated as Lputyan; hy, Սմբատ Լպուտյան; born 14 February 1958, in Yerevan) is an Armenian chess Grandmaster. He was first at tournament in Berlin 1982, shared first at Athens 1983 and at Irkutsk 1983, first at Sarajevo 1985 and at Irkutsk 1986, shared first at Hastings 1986–87 and first at Dortmund 1988. He won the Armenian Championship in 1978, 1980, 1998, and 2001. Grandmaster (chess)
Grandmaster (GM) is a title awarded to chess players by the world chess organization FIDE. Apart from World Champion, Grandmaster is the highest title a chess player can attain. Once achieved, the title is held for life, though exceptionally it has been revoked for cheating. The title of Grandmaster, along with the lesser FIDE titles of International Master (IM) and FIDE Master (FM), is open to all players regardless of gender. The great majority of grandmasters are men, but 40 women have been awarded the GM title as of 2022, out of a total of about 2000 grandmasters. Since about the year 2000, most of the top 10 women have held the GM title. There is also a Woman Grandmaster title with lower requirements awarded only to women. Alex Yermolinsky (russian: Алексей Ермолинский, translit=Alexey Yermolinskiy; born April 11, 1958) is an American chess player. Awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE in 1992, he is a two-time U.S. champion. Career Yermolinsky tied for first with Vladislav Vorotnikov in the Leningrad City Chess Championship in 1985. In 1993, Yermolinsky won the U.S. Chess Championship, tying for first place with Alexander Shabalov. In 1996 he was the sole champion. He won the World Open in Philadelphia three times: in 1993, 1995 and 1996; in 1999 he shared first with nine other players, but Gregory Serper won the playoff.
