Hood River News
The ''Hood River News'' was a semi-weekly newspaper published in Hood River, Oregon, United States, from 1905 to 2020. It was published on Wednesdays and Saturdays by Eagle Newspapers and had a circulation of 4,226. History C. P. Sonnichsen and Hugh G. Ball bought the News in 1908. Sonnichsen assumed the role of manager and Ball as editor. By 1912 the newspaper had 1,500 subscribers and transitioned from weekly to semiweekly. During his career, Ball headed the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association and was on the board of directors for the National Editorial Association. The ''Hood River News'', along with ''The Dalles Chronicle ''The Dalles Chronicle'' was a twice-weekly newspaper published in The Dalles, Oregon, United States. Eagle Newspapers is an American newspaper publisher serving the states of Oregon, Washington and Idaho. History The origins of the company date back to 1933 when Elmo Smith and his wife, Dorothy, borrowed $25 to establish a mimeographed weekly newspaper in Ontario, Oregon. In 1948, Smith sold the paper and used the proceeds to purchase the Blue Mountain Eagle in John Day, Oregon. That same year Smith and his friend, Bill Robinson, purchased The Madras Pioneer and the family business was incorporated. In 1961, the company purchased the Hood River News. The company changed its name to Eagle Newspapers, Inc. in 1979. In 2013, Eagle Newspapers sold six Oregon newspapers in Central Oregon and the Willamette Valley to the Pamplin Media Group. In 2020, the company sold the Polk County Itemizer-Observer to SJ Olson Publishing, Inc. Hood River County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2020 census, the population was 23,977. The county seat is Hood River. The county was established in 1908 and is named for the Hood River, a tributary of the Columbia River. Hood River County comprises the Hood River, OR Micropolitan Statistical Area. The city of Hood River is the seat of Hood River County, Oregon, United States. It is a port on the Columbia River, and is named for the nearby Hood River. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 8,313. It is the only city in Oregon where public consumption of alcohol on sidewalks or parks is totally unrestricted. The Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association is a trade association for all paid-circulation daily, weekly, and multi-weekly newspapers in the U.S. state of Oregon. It represents and promotes newspapers, and encourages excellence in reporting and coverage with an annual series of awards. ''The Dalles Chronicle'' was a twice-weekly newspaper published in The Dalles, Oregon, United States. It served The Dalles, and much of the eastern Columbia Gorge region, and the outlying areas of Wasco County, Oregon, Wasco and Sherman County, Oregon, Sherman Counties. Its first issue was published on December 10, 1890. The ''Chronicle'' was formerly owned by Scripps League Newspapers, which was acquired by Pulitzer, Inc., Pulitzer in 1996. Pulitzer sold the paper to Eagle Newspapers (Oregon), Eagle Newspapers later that year. ''The Dalles Chronicle'', ''Hood River News'', and ''White Salmon Enterprise'', ceased publication on March 31, 2020. They were replaced by the combined ''Columbia Gorge News'' on April 8.
