Hood (rail Transport)
A hood is a rigid cover to protect a load on a flatcar, gondola (rail), gondola or a coil car. Gondola hoods developed from loose tarpaulin covers that were deemed unsatisfactory in damp climates; but tarpaulins are still used as hoods in some cases. For some gondola loads, hoods made of fiberglass were sufficient. The hoods on coil cars were originally permanently attached to the cars when they were developed in the mid-20th century. Hoods could also be mounted on wheels enabling them to slide out of the way toward one end of the car for loading. References

A flatcar (US) (also flat car, or flatbed) is a piece of rolling stock that consists of an open, flat deck mounted on a pair of trucks (US) or bogies (UK), one at each end containing four or six wheels. Occasionally, flat cars designed to carry extra heavy or extra large loads are mounted on a pair (or rarely, more) of bogies under each end. In US railroad terminology, a gondola is an open-topped rail vehicle used for transporting loose bulk materials. Because of their low side walls, gondolas are also suitable for the carriage of such high-density cargos as steel plates or coils, or of bulky items such as prefabricated sections of rail track. Gondolas are distinct from hopper cars in that they do not have doors on their floor to empty cargo. In Australia these wagons are called ''open wagons''. Coil cars (also referred to as "steel coil cars" or "coil steel cars") are a specialized type of rolling stock designed for the transport of coils (i.e., rolls) of sheet metal, particularly steel. They are considered a subtype of the gondola car, though they bear little resemblance to a typical gondola. History Prior to the invention of this type, coils of sheet steel and other metals were carried on end or in cradles in open or covered gondolas. Load shifting, damage, and awkward loading and unloading were all problems, and since so much sheet steel and other sheet metals are railroad transported, a specialized car was designed for transporting coiled metals.
