The Honorary Title of "Merited Military Pilot of the Russian Federation" (russian: Заслуженный военный лётчик Российской Федерации) is a state award of the Russian Federation that can trace its history to the Soviet Era. It was initially established on January 26, 1965 by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet № 3230-VI as the honorary title of "Merited Military Pilot of the USSR" (russian: Заслуженный военный лётчик СССР). Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the title was retained by the Law of the Russian Federation 2555-1 dated March 20, 1992 and renamed "Merited Military Pilot of the Russian Federation". Timur Avtandilovich Apakidze (russian: Тимур Автандилович Апакидзе, ka, თემურ აფაქიძე, also transliterated as ''Temur Apakidze''; 4 March 1954 – 17 July 2001) was a Russian major general of Georgian ethnicity, fighter pilot, flight specialist and founder of the modern Russian Naval Aviation and Hero of the Russian Federation. Honorary titles of the Russian Federation (russian: Почётные звания Российской Федерации) are titles given to citizens of the Russian Federation for professional and/or social achievements, but can be revoked by a vote in the State Duma. Rejection of honorary titles cannot be veto'd by the President. The word russian: "Заслуженный" translates as "Honoured". During the period of the Soviet Union, a system of professional honorary titles was created to be used across the USSR to recognize outstanding personal professional achievements. Nikolay Timofeyevich Antoshkin (russian: Николай Тимофеевич Антошкин; 19 December 1942 – 17 January 2021) was a Mokshas, Mokshan Russian Air Force colonel general, Hero of the Soviet Union and politician. Born in 1942 in Bashkortostan, Antoshkin was drafted into the Soviet Army in August 1961. After graduating from military aviation school, he served with reconnaissance aviation units. He became commander of the Air Force of the 20th Guards Army in May 1980. After graduation from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia, Military Academy of the General Staff, Antoshkin became commander of the Air Force and deputy commander of the Central Group of Forces.
