The Hong Kong Film Award for Best New Performer is an annual Hong Kong industry award presented to an actor or actress for the best performance by a new artist. The performance is often, but not obligatory, the debut role of the artist. History The award was established at the 2nd Hong Kong Film Awards (1983) and the first winner in this category was Ma Si-San for her role in the film ''Boat People''. There are 5, sometimes 6, nominations for the category of Best New Performer from which one actor or actress is chosen the winner of the Hong Kong Film Award for Best New Performer. The HKFA for Best New Performer was sometimes awarded for a very young actor or actress such as Xu Jiao, who was only nine years old at the time of the award, or Goum Ian Iskandar, a nine-year-old Malaysian actor who won in both supporting actor and best new artist categories for his performance in ''After This Our Exile''. The Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA; ), founded in 1982, is an annual film awards ceremony in Hong Kong. The ceremonies are typically in April. The awards recognise achievement in various aspects of filmmaking, such as directing, screenwriting, acting and cinematography. The awards are the Hong Kong equivalent to the American Academy Awards. The HKFA, incorporated into Hong Kong Film Awards Association Ltd. since December 1993, are currently managed by a board of directors, which consists of representatives from thirteen professional film bodies in Hong Kong. Voting on eligible films for the HKFA is conducted January through March every year and is open to all registered voters, which include local film workers as well as critics, and a selected group of adjudicators. Gouw Ian Iskandar
Ian Gouw (, born April 9, 1997) is an actor, artist, and producer from Hong Kong. Career At the age of eight, Gouw was cast as a lead role in the film Fu zi (also known as "After This Our Exile"), directed by Patrick Tam. Gouw modelled for DKNY Children's Clothing as well as for Disney Clothing in 2006. At age nine, Gouw went on to become the youngest actor ever to win and receive the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival for Best Supporting Actor.
