Hong Kong Express (music)
2814 (stylized in fullwidth characters as ２８１４) is an English-American collaborative ambient and vaporwave project of the electronic musicians Luke Laurila and David Russo, also known as Telepath テレパシー能力者 (stylized as "") and HKE (an abbreviation of the earlier moniker "Hong Kong Express") respectively. The duo is best known for its second album, ''Birth of a New Day'' (新しい日の誕生)'','' described by ''Rolling Stone'' as "a late night cruise through the cyber-future dream highway." History 2814 debuted in 2014 with a self-titled release on the Internet music label Ailanthus Recordings. The album was followed up in early 2015 by ''Birth of a New Day'', released digitally and in a limited run of CDs on HKE's own label, Dream Catalogue. Vaporwave is a microgenre of electronic music, visual art style, and Internet meme that emerged in the early 2010s. Arcola is an offshoot of the record label Warp Records. It was set up in late 2003, and takes its name from the Arcola Theatre, Arcola Street in Dalston, London where Warp held the launch party for the label. After the success of ''Birth of a New Day'', one of the members stated that he wanted to "leave 2814 to rest", but he couldn't as he states that the project "just works so well for us both." Background In his review of the album, Sean O'Neal from ''The A.V. Club'' states that before ''Rain Temple'', vaporwave felt like an "exhausting inside joke before it even started," adding that since the genre had been split into a multitude of subgenres, it was difficult to know "how seriously" they were to be taken, if they were serious at all.
