Hong Kong English pop () is a genre of music consisting of English-language songs that are made, performed and popularised in Hong Kong. It is known as simply English pop by Hong Kongers. Hong Kongers
Hongkongers (), also known as Hong Kongers, Hong Kongese, Hongkongese, Hong Kong citizens and Hong Kong people, typically refers to residents of the territory of Hong Kong; although may also refer to others who were born and/or raised in the territory. The earliest inhabitants of Hong Kong are indigenous villagers, who have lived in the area since before British colonization. The majority of Hongkongers today are descended from Han Chinese migrants from mainland China, most of whom are Cantonese and trace their ancestral home to the province of Guangdong. However, the territory also holds other Han Chinese subgroups including the Hakka, Hoklo, Teochew (Chiuchow), Shanghainese, Sichuanese and Taiwanese. Meanwhile, non-Han Chinese Hongkongers such as the British, Filipinos, Indonesians, South Asians and Vietnamese also make up six per cent of Hong Kong's population. John Royce Mathis (born September 30, 1935) is an American singer of popular music. Starting his career with singles of standard music, he became highly popular as an album artist, with several dozen of his albums achieving gold or platinum status and 73 making the ''Billboard'' charts. The Young Men
The Young Men was a Hong Kong folk/rock band in the late 1960s and early 1970s featured in the local media as the answer to the super American band Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The group consisted of Stephen Lam (lead vocal, guitars, harmonicas), Ralph Wong (vocal, guitars, harmonicas), and Carl Wu (vocal, guitars, keyboard). They performed in the 1971 Hong Kong Festival and were regularly as featured artist in the Hong Kong TVB variety TV show, ''Enjoy Yourself Tonight'', in the early 1970s. Stephen Lam was a troubadour solo artist in the Hong Kong club scene singing cover tunes by Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, the Eagles & the Beatles. Zhang Lu (singer)
Zhang Lu (Chinese: 張露; January 21, 1932 – January 26, 2009), often written Chang Loo, was a Chinese singer and actress, known as a pioneer in Chinese pop beginning in the 1940s. Biography She was born Zhang Xiuying (张秀英) in Suzhou in 1932. Her family moved to Shanghai when she was a young child. Zhang was discovered in the mid-1940s by her neighbor, a broadcaster, who recommended her to sing at a local radio station. She started out singing covers of popular Zhou Xuan songs. By the late 1940s, she had signed with EMI. She released a series of hits songs, becoming popular in both Shanghai and Hong Kong. Pathé Records was an international record company and label and producer of phonographs, based in France, and active from the 1890s through the 1930s. Early years The Pathé record business was founded by brothers Charles and Émile Pathé, then owners of a successful bistro in Paris. In the mid-1890s, they began selling Edison and Columbia phonographs and accompanying cylinder records. Shortly thereafter, the brothers designed and sold their own phonographs. Mona Fong
Mona Fong Yat-wah, Lady Shaw (27 July 1934 – 22 November 2017) was a Hong Kong film and television producer and production manager. She was born Li Menglan in Shanghai. Career Fong achieved fame as one of the most popular nightclub singers and recording artists in Singapore and Hong Kong in the 1950s, especially singing English covers of top hits of the time. She married media mogul Sir Run Run Shaw (his second marriage) and became Deputy Chairman and General Manager of Shaw Brothers Studio and Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB). Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) is the public broadcasting service in Hong Kong. GOW, the predecessor to RTHK, was established in 1928 as the first broadcasting service in Hong Kong.
