Western School Corporation is a public school district which serves Russiaville, Alto, New London, West Middleton, and southwestern Kokomo in Howard County, Indiana. The district spans the Howard County townships of Harrison, Honey Creek and Monroe, and the school buildings themselves straddle Harrison and Monroe. WSC's high school gained national attention in the mid-1980s. When one of the students at the junior high, a hemophiliac Ryan White had been diagnosed with AIDS and recovering from an opportunistic infection (viral pneumonia), the school decided that White was ineligible to attend school out of fear the disease could spread. Forest Township, Clinton County, Indiana
Forest Township is one of fourteen townships in Clinton County, Indiana. As of the 2010 census, its population was 760 and it contained 328 housing units. The township was named for the large amount of timber it contained at the time it was organized. History After the completion of the " Clover Leaf" railroad through the area in 1874 and the establishment of the town of Forest along it, residents petitioned the county commissioners to create a new township for their area out of the existing Johnson and Warren townships. On January 2, 1882, the petition was granted and the township organized with Samuel M. Davis as the first trustee. The first permanent white settlers in the township were Page and Sarah Sims who arrived in 1839 and resided in the township until their death. Prairie Township is one of six townships in Tipton County, Indiana, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,140 and it contained 482 housing units. History Prior to becoming a township, a portion of the land was Miami Indian reservation land. White squatters did settle illegally in the area. The first known named white settler in the area was Alexander Suite. He came to Indiana in 1842 originally Tennessee. Suite built the first log cabin in the township. He eventually relocated to Russiaville, Indiana, eventually. Russiaville () is a town in Honey Creek Township, Howard County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,094 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kokomo Metropolitan Statistical Area. Russiaville was incorporated sometime between the 1860 and 1870 US Census. Etymology The town was named for Jean Baptiste de Richardville (whose father's surname was Richerville), a Miami chief of French-Miami descent who had relations with the United States government in treaty making in the early nineteenth century. Through the French pronunciation of "Ri-shar-ville," the name was gradually corrupted and changed to the current spelling; it has been pronounced "Roo-sha-ville" through much of its history. The apparent association with Russia led tthe town high school's naming its athletic teams the “Cossacks” until 1949 when county consolidation changed Russiaville High School to Western High School. Clinton County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of 2010, the population was 33,224. The county seat is Frankfort. History Clinton County officially came into existence on March 1, 1830, and was named in honor of DeWitt Clinton, the sixth Governor of New York State and architect of the Erie Canal, which opened up the Upper Midwest to settlement.
