Honer Plaza
Honer Plaza, now the Bristol Marketplace, at 17th and Bristol streets in northwestern Santa Ana, California, was one of the first shopping centers in Orange County, California and one of the busiest in the county in its early days. Plans were announced for its construction in 1953 and it opened in 1958, starting with a Ralphs supermarket. Other anchor tenants over the 1950s-1980s included Montgomery Ward (which opened on August 11, 1960 and closed along with the entire chain due to bankruptcy in early 2001), Long Beach-based Robert's department store, Nahas department store, and J. J. Newberry. By the 1980s, the center was outdated in design — two rows of stores with a small pedestrian mall in the center, surrounded by acres of parking — and had lost business to more modern malls including Fashion Square/MainPlace and The City Shopping Center in Orange. Ralphs is an American supermarket chain in Southern California. The largest subsidiary of Cincinnati-based Kroger, it is the oldest such chain west of the Mississippi River. Kroger also operates stores under the Food 4 Less and Foods Co. names in California. Robert's was a department store based in Long Beach, California. The chain began when Morris Burman opened the first store in East Los Angeles. In 1950, Burman bought an existing store in North Long Beach at 5350 Long Beach Blvd., and opened it as the Jones Department Store. In 1951, they opened Robert's at 16630 Bellflower Blvd. in Bellflower. Nahas (pronounced Nay-haz) was a chain of department stores owned by A. S Nahas, operating in Greater Los Angeles, carrying clothing, household goods and electronics. They also acquired Rathbun's department store at 5311 Lankershim Blvd. in North Hollywood and cobranded it "Nahas Rathbuns" before the branch closed in 1980. The remaining Nahas stores closed in 1981–2. The Nahas chain originated as a partnership between Mr. A. S. Nahas and Donald R. Nuss in 1951. In 1970 the company was incorporated.
