Hometown Throwdown
Hometown Throwdown is an annual music festival held in Greater Boston. It is hosted by the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. The festival features local Boston-area acts, focusing on ska, punk and hardcore bands. The festival is traditionally held in December, usually the week between Christmas and New Year's Eve at clubs around Boston. The first Throwdown was held in from July 27-31, 1994 at The Middle East in Cambridge. Starting in 1995, the festival moved to December, where it has remained ever since. It ran annually until 2002, when the Bosstones went on hiatus. Both the band, and their festival, returned to active status in 2007, and it has been held annually ever since, with the most recent Throwdown, the 22nd, being held December 27-29, 2019 at the House of Blues in Boston. The Rathskeller
The Rathskeller (known as The Rat) was a live music venue in Boston that was open from 1974 to 1997. It was considered the "granddaddy" of Boston rock venues. During its heyday, the Rat hosted such acts as the Cars, the Pixies, Metallica, Dead Kennedys, the Ramones, Talking Heads, R.E.M., Dinosaur Jr., The Replacements, the Police, and Soundgarden. From 1980 to 1987, The Hoodoo BBQ, which ''Esquire'' called one of the "100 Best Restaurants in America"—was located at The Rat. In the 1960s the Rat was a restaurant and bar catering to college students. At the time, it offered live music in a back room, featuring local bands such as the Remains (who opened for the Beatles on their final tour), the Lost (with future Boston punk legend Willie "Loco" Alexander) and The Mods (whose drummer Harry Sandler went on to play with " Boston Sound" hitmakers Orpheus). Sam Black Church (band)
Sam Black Church (also known as SBC) is an American, rock band. It was named after the West Virginia community of Sam Black Church. History Sam Black Church, as a band, was known for their monstrous sound, unique vocals, and energetic live performances. They played a frenetic blend of hardcore, metal, and thrash and shared the bill with acts as diverse as Bad Brains, Clutch, Motörhead, Cro-Mags, Nothingface, Stuck Mojo, and Helmet. They were one of the most popular hardcore bands in the northeast United States for a period in the mid-1990s. After releasing their first three EPs on Taang! Records, Sam Black Church self-released a CD and then signed with Wonderdrug Records where they remained until the band broke up in 2000. Six Going On Seven was an indie rock band from Boston, Massachusetts. Members included Josh English (vocals/bass), James Bransford (guitar) and Will Bartlett (drums). The Ducky Boys
The Ducky Boys are a street punk band from Boston. Since forming in 1995 in the Charlestown neighborhood of Boston, the band has released six full-length albums and over 80 songs. The band's name is derived from the name of an Irish street gang in the 1979 movie, '' The Wanderers''. For the past ten years, the band has been composed of frontman Mark Lind (bass guitar and vocals), Jason Messina drums and guitarist Douglas Sullivan. Kicked in the Head were a ska punk band founded in Boston, Massachusetts in the mid-1990s. Known for Halloween shows with Big D and The Kids Table, the band signed with the label run by Big D, Fork in Hand Records, and released their debut album ''World Domination'' in 1997. Big D And The Kids Table
Big D and the Kids Table is a ska punk band formed in October 1995 in Boston, Massachusetts when its members converged in college. Their first release was on their own Fork in Hand Records label, but have since teamed with Springman Records and SideOneDummy. The band has been noted for its strict DIY work ethic, such as engineering, producing, and releasing their own albums and videos and self-promotion of their own shows. The band released Good Luck in 1999 on Asian Man Records and quickly gained a large underground audience. The album featured a 10 piece band, including six horn players. The Shods
The Shods are a band from Lowell, Massachusetts who have released five albums and an EP to date. The Shods have a loyal regional following, and remain well known in their home state. Origins The Shods formed in 1993 in Lowell, MA with musicians Scott Pittman, Roy Costa, and music mainstay Kevin Stevenson, whose other projects included Formicide, Only Living Witness, and Duck Duck. The Pietasters
The Pietasters are an American eight-piece ska/soul band from Washington, D.C., with additional members from Maryland and Virginia. History In 1990, Stephen Jackson and Chris Watt met at Virginia Tech, through mutual friend Tal Bayer, who was attending nearby Radford University, and they formed a ska band called the Slugs with their former schoolmate Tom Goodin, and an architecture classmate, Ben Gauslin. They changed their name to the Dancecrashers for a few months, before taking the name the Pietasters.
