Homestead is a L5 meteorite fallen in 1875 in Iowa, United States. History On the evening of 12 February 1875 above Iowa a brilliant Meteoroid, fireball was observed. About 100 meteorite fragments fell over a snowy countryside area from South Amana, Iowa, Amana to Boltonville, Iowa, Boltonville in Iowa County, Iowa, Iowa County. The first found fragment, a stone weighing about , was discovered by Sarah Sherlock south of Homestead, Iowa, Homestead.Paul Garvin, ''Iowa's minerals: their occurrence, origins, industries, and lore''. University of Iowa Press, 1998187/ref> The area was wooded and covered by snow, impeding recovery efforts. Gustavus Detlef Hinrichs
Gustavus Detlef Hinrichs (2 December 1836 – 14 February 1923) was a chemist and natural philosopher most widely known for his findings on periodic laws within the chemical elements. Life Hinrichs was born in 1836 in Lunden in the Duchy of Holstein, which at that time was under the rule of Denmark although it was simultaneously part of the German Confederation. He attended the local polytechnic school and the University of Copenhagen. During his schooling he published several articles and books, including descriptions of the magnetic field of earth and its interaction with the aether. Hinrichs graduated in 1860, between the First and Second Schleswig Wars. He emigrated later that year to the United States, settling initially in Davenport, Iowa, where he taught school, then in nearby Iowa City. Ordinary Chondrite
The ordinary chondrites (sometimes called the O chondrites) are a class of stony chondritic meteorites. They are by far the most numerous group, comprising 87% of all finds. Hence, they have been dubbed "ordinary". The ordinary chondrites are thought to have originated from three parent asteroids, with the fragments making up the H chondrite, L chondrite and LL chondrite groups respectively. Homestead is an unincorporated community in Iowa County, Iowa, United States. It has the ZIP code 52236. Homestead is a census-designated place with the population recorded as 148 in the 2010 census. Geography Homestead is in northeastern Iowa County at the junction of U.S. Route 151 with U.S. Route 6.
