Homer Martien Cook
Homer Martien Cook (1869–1948) was president of Northwest Missouri State University. He was born in La Grange, Missouri. At LaGrange College he received a bachelor's degree in 1890, a master's degree in 1904 from the University of Chicago and an LLd from the Columbia School of Expression in Chicago in 1906. He was pastor of the Maryville Baptist Church and taught physical culture and expression at the newly organized Northwest. During his tenure the school was beset by fiscal problems and faculty was not paid. Work stopped on the Administration Building. Frank Deerwester
Frank Deerwester (died May 26, 1926) was the first president of Northwest Missouri State University from 1906 to 1907. Butler was born in Bates County, Missouri and attended Butler College, the Second District Normal School, New York University, the University of Chicago and Harvard. During his first year he fought funding battles over the Administration Building and set up education standards of the school. Deerwester came from Warrensburg where he was professor of Pedagogy and he continued to teach the subject as well as be president. Henry Kirby Taylor
Henry Kirby Taylor (August 10, 1858 – January 21, 1934) was president of Kentucky Wesleyan College, Northwest Missouri State University and the University of Texas at Arlington. Early life Taylor was born in Vanceburg, Kentucky. Kentucky Wesleyan Taylor earned a master's degree from Kentucky Wesleyan and was the school's president from 1906 to 1909. Northwest Missouri Taylor was president of Northwest from 1909 to 1913. After Taylor arrived at Northwest, his predecessor Homer Martien Cook continued living in the President's house for four months, so the school had two de facto presidents during this period. Taylor addressed numerous fiscal problems at the young university including paying back salaries to faculty (even though he went without himself). Northwest Missouri State University
Northwest Missouri State University is a public university in Maryville, Missouri. It has an enrollment of about 8,505 students. Founded in 1905 as a teachers college, its campus is based on the design for Forest Park at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair and is the official Missouri State Arboretum. La Grange, Missouri
La Grange is a city in Lewis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 825 at the 2020 census. Since the 1960 census, the population has been dwindling. It is part of the Quincy, IL–MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. History La Grange was founded in 1830. A post office called La Grange has been in operation since 1833. In 1885, the Supreme Court ruled against the city in ''Cole v. La Grange''. The court found that the city could only use eminent domain powers for public purposes and not to specifically benefit the La Grange Iron and Steel Company.
