Homer Elias
Homer Cary Elias (May 1, 1955 – October 3, 2001) was an American football guard who played seven seasons for the Detroit Lions in the National Football League (NFL). After playing collegiate football at Tennessee State University, Elias appeared in 96 career NFL games, with a 39 average. Guard (gridiron Football)
In gridiron football, a guard (G), otherwise known as an offensive guard (OG), is a player who lines up between the center (American football), center and the offensive tackle, tackles on the offensive line of a football team on the line of scrimmage used primarily for Blocking (American football), blocking. Right guards (RG) is the term for the guards on the right of the offensive line, while left guards (LG) are on the left side. Guards are to the right or left of the center. The guard's job is to protect the quarterback from the incoming defensive line, linemen during pass plays, as well as creating openings (holes) for the running backs to head through. 1978 NFL Draft
The 1978 NFL draft was the procedure by which National Football League teams selected amateur college football players. It is officially known as the NFL Annual Player Selection Meeting. The draft was held May 2–3, 1978, at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City, New York. The league also held a supplemental draft after the regular draft and before the regular season. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had the first overall pick in the 1978 draft, by virtue of their 2–12 record in 1977. Herbert Vaughn Orvis (October 17, 1946 – August 14, 2020) was an American professional football player who was a defensive tackle for the Detroit Lions and the Baltimore Colts in a ten-year career that lasted from 1972 to 1981 in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Colorado Buffaloes. Biography Orvis went to Beecher High School. He joined the United States Army prior to his senior year at Beecher High School. Orvis was able to receive his high school diploma after serving overseas in the military. Orvis played college football at the University of Colorado. Orvis was a 1971 All-American and twice earned first-team All-Big Eight honors. He was named to the 1970s All-Big Eight Decade team. In 1971, CU finished ranked #3 in national polls.
