He is currently signed to NorthernBlues Music, based in Toronto, Ontario. Homans has also earned bachelor's and master's degrees from University of Oregon and Oklahoma State University. Jennifer A. Homans (born 1960) is an American historian, author, and dance critic. Her book ''Apollo's Angels: A History of Ballet'' was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in 2010. Early life and education Homans was raised in Chicago, Illinois, where she trained as a ballerina from the age of eight. By the time she was a teenager, Homans had enrolled in dance classes at the University of Chicago and eventually left the state for more serious training at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and School of American Ballet. After dancing professionally with the Pacific Northwest Ballet, Homans decided to enroll in Columbia University at the age of 26. After earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in French literature, she enrolled in New York University (NYU) for her PhD in Modern European History. Robert Homans
Robert Edward Homans (November 8, 1877 – July 28, 1947) was an American actor who entered films in 1923 after a lengthy stage career. Life and career Robert Homans was born November 8, 1877, in Malden, Massachusetts. Although he studied medicine for three years after his college graduation, a 1906 newspaper article noted that "the 'stage bee' got into his bonnet and nothing would do but that he become an actor." His Broadway credits include '' The Blue Bird'' (1910), ''The Blue Envelope'' (1915), ''Johnny, Get Your Gun'' (1916) and ''Like a King'' (1921). His screen debut came in ''Madame Sherry''. He appeared in some 400 films between 1917 and 1946. On April 18, 1909, Homans married Agnes J. Mellon in San Francisco. Another source gives his wife's name as Agnes Maynard. Homans died in Los Angeles, California on July 28, 1947, from a heart attack. John Homans
John Homans (1877–1954) was an American surgeon who described Homans' sign and Homans' operation. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and was educated at Harvard University and Harvard Medical School. His residency was undertaken at Massachusetts General Hospital, and was followed by work in Baltimore and London. He returned to Boston to the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in 1912. Towards the end of his career he worked at Yale University as the Carmalt Visiting Professor, returning to Peter Bent Brigham during World War II. Homans worked on developing hypophysectomy with Harvey Cushing, and they and Samuel James Crowe published the first evidence of the link between the pituitary gland and the reproductive system in 1910. He later worked on peripheral vascular disease, helping to popularise the ligation of the saphenofemoral junction for treatment of varicose veins, and advocating ligation of the subsartorial vein to stop migrating clots causing pulmonary embolus. Benjamin Homans was an American merchant captain, and politician who served as the 4th Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth and who served from as the Chief Clerk of the Navy Department, which was at the time the second highest civilian position in the US Navy. Helen Houston Homans McLean (February 8, 1877 – March 29, 1949) was an American tennis champion. Career Homans won the women's doubles title at the 1905 U.S. National Championship and the singles title the next year. Homans played mixed doubles with Marshall McLean as early as 1902 and later married him a/in New York City in 1907. In mixed doubles, she reached the semifinals partnering Harry F. Allen in 1905. In 1911, she won three of the New Jersey State championship titles. In 1913, she regained her title when she defeated Marie Wagner at the Morristown Field Club in Morristown, New Jersey. On September 19, 1913, she was defeated by Clare Cassell at the Montclair Athletic Club. In medicine, Homans' sign (sometimes spelled as Homans sign or called dorsiflexion sign) is considered by some physicians to be a sign of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). It was defined by John Homans in 1941 as discomfort behind the knee upon forced dorsiflexion of the foot. After many examples of false-positive Homans' signs were reported, Homans redefined it in 1944, stating that "discomfort need have no part in the reaction", and that increased resistance, involuntary flexure of the knee or pain in the calf upon forced dorsiflexion should be considered positive responses. It is estimated to have a sensitivity of 10-54% and a specificity of 39-89%, and is thus considered to have no diagnostic value, since a positive sign does not indicate DVT and a negative sign does not rule it out. Liesbeth Homans (born 17 February 1973 in Antwerp) is a Belgian politician and is affiliated to Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (N-VA, New Flemish Alliance). She was elected as a member of the Flemish Parliament in 2009 and as a member of the Belgian Senate in 2010. She was chairwoman of the Openbaar centrum voor maatschappelijk welzijn (Public Centre for Social Welfare) in Antwerp from 2013 until July 2014, when she became a member of the Bourgeois Government as Flemish Minister for Local Government, Poverty Reduction, Housing, Civic Integration, Equal Opportunities, Cities and Social Economy.
