Holy Family High School (Glendale, California)
Holy Family High School was a Catholic, all-girls preparatory school in Glendale, California. It is located in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Background Holy Family Girls High School, a college-preparatory school, opened its doors to 21 freshmen in September 1937. For three years, classes were held on the top floor of the grade school and were conducted by the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with Sister Mary St. Bertha, B.V.M., as principal until 1943. Members of the charter class recall that the chemistry lab was a former piano lesson room, that the first issue of the school paper was published under the most adverse conditions, and that only high school girls could use the front stairs. In 1940, because of the growing enrollment, Msgr. Galvin purchased the old Knights of Columbus Hall on Lomita Avenue and converted it into a four-year high school. The 1971 San Fernando earthquake (also known as the 1971 Sylmar earthquake) occurred in the early morning of February 9 in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains in southern California. Holy Family Catholic Church is a Catholic parish located on Elk Avenue in Glendale, California that consists of a Catholic church, an elementary school and an all-girls high school. Founded in 1907, it is the oldest parish in Glendale. Parish history Early years (1907–1923) The City of Glendale was incorporated in 1906, and in 1907 Bishop Thomas Conaty sent Father James Stephen O'Neill to Glendale to establish a new parish. Initially, the parish celebrated Mass on the second floor of the Tropico Mercantile Building on San Fernando Road. Later, Mass was celebrated in a two-story house near the corner of Brand and Windsor. The parish's 65 members had previously travelled to Mass either at the Plaza Church in Los Angeles or the San Gabriel Mission. The 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake occurred in the southern San Gabriel Valley and surrounding communities of Southern California, United States, at on October 1. The moderate magnitude 5.9 blind thrust earthquake was centered several miles north of Whittier in the town of Rosemead, had a relatively shallow depth, and was felt throughout southern California and southern Nevada.
