Holwerd
Holwert is a village in Noardeast-Fryslân municipality in the northern Netherlands, in the province of Friesland. It had a population of around 1,607 in January 2017. Before 2019, the village was part of the Dongeradeel municipality. The ferry to the island of Ameland departs from Holwert. Wadloopcentrum Fryslân in Holwert is a centre for the training of wadlopen guides and the preservation of the sport. There are two windmills in Holwert, ''De Hoop'' and ''Miedenmolen''. History The village was first mentioned in early-11th century as Holeuurt, and means "hollow ''terp''". Holwert developed as a ''terp'' (artificial living mound) village several centuries before Christ in a radial shape. The original ''terp'' was designated for the church, and in the 8th or 9th century, a long stretched out ''terp'' was created for trade and residential houses. De Hoop, Holwerd
De Hoop ( en, The Hope) is a smock mill in Holwerd, Friesland, Netherlands which was built in the 1730s and is working for trade. The mill is listed as a Rijksmonument, number 38709. History The earliest record of a windmill in Hollum is c1399, when the ''windrecht'' ( en, right to wind) was mentioned on page 292 of the ''Zoenbrief en Accoord'' between Count Albrecht van Beieren and the Frisian people. An "old and established town" near Dokkum is mentioned in the document, and windmills are also mentioned. It is generally accepted that the town referred to is Holwerd. In 1511, a "mill yard" is mentioned at Holwerd. In 1515, the town was burnt in a battle between the Duke of Gelre and the Duke of Saksen. Amongst the buildings burnt was a dye mill. In 1677, a mill on the town wall was sold for ƒ2,900, a high price for the time. Miedenmolen, Holwerd
Miedenmolen is a smock mill in Holwerd, Friesland, Netherlands which was built in 1855. The mill has been restored to working order. It is listed as a Rijksmonument, number 38696. History ''Meidenmolen'' was built in 1855 to drain the Dwergsmear Polder. In 1953, the water board decided to fully mechanise the mill. Meetings held on 27 December 1961 and 13 March 1962 resulted in the mill being assisted by an electric motor, but full mechanisation was not carried out. The mill was restored in 1966. The mill was sold to Stichting De Fryske Mole ( en, Frisian Mills Foundation) on 4 May 1976. Further restorations were carried out in 1978 and 1994, the latter was carried out by millwright Thijs Jellema of Birdaard. In 2004 a new steel Archimedes' screw was fitted. North Friesland Railway
The Noord-Friesche Locaalspoorweg-Maatschappij (North Friesland Railway) was a railway serving the sparsely populated north of the Dutch province of Friesland. It was operated by the North Friesland Local Railway Company (Dutch: ''Noord-Friesche Locaalspoorweg-Maatschappij'' (NFLS)). It was what would be known in the UK as a light railway. The line was built to and was about 91 km (57 mi) in length. History The NFLS had a network of lines in north Friesland. The lines opened in eight stages: Wetsens station closed in May 1902, less than eight months after opening. On 1 December 1905, the NFLS was taken over by the Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij (HSM), which itself was nationalised on 1 December 1938, becoming part of Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS). Dongeradeel (; fy, Dongeradiel ) is a former municipality in the northern Netherlands. Ameland
Ameland (; West Frisian: It Amelân) is a municipality and one of the West Frisian Islands off the north coast of the Netherlands. It consists mostly of sand dunes. It is the third major island of the West Frisians. It neighbours islands Terschelling to the west and Schiermonnikoog to the east. Hans Willem Van Aylva
Hans Willem van Aylva (c. 1633, Holwerd – 21 February 1691, near Leuven) was a Dutch soldier and lieutenant general. Raid on the Medway and Franco-Dutch War In 1667 he participated in the Dutch Raid on Medway, as commander of the Frisian squadron. He was appointed a major general in 1668 and promoted to lieutenant general four years later.In 1672, at the start of the Franco-Dutch War after Prince William III's appointment as captain general, he was again appointed lieutenant general of infantry and charged with the defence of Friesland. Aylva waged a kind of guerrilla war in the surroundings of Heerenveen; with a small force and his Frisian militias, he had hastily put Friesland in a state of defence by raising earthen entrenchments on the south-east side, forming a line from Kuinre along Heerenveen to Groningen. Noardeast-Fryslân
Noardeast-Fryslân is a municipality of Friesland in the northern Netherlands. It was established 1 January 2019 and consists of the former municipalities of Dongeradeel, Ferwerderadiel and Kollumerland en Nieuwkruisland, all three of which dissolved on the same day. The municipality is located in the province of Friesland on the Wadden Sea coast, in the north of the Netherlands. Noardeast-Fryslân is bordered by the municipalities of Waadhoeke, Ameland, Schiermonnikoog, Leeuwarden, Dantumadiel and the province of Groningen. The population in January 2019 was 45,181. Mudflat hikers are people who, with the aid of a tide table, use a period of low water to walk and wade on the watershed of the mudflats, especially from the Frisian mainland coast to the Frisian islands. The Wadden Sea, a belt of the North Sea, is well suited to this traditional practice. Belts of this shallow sea lie off the mainland of the Netherlands, between Friesland and the Frisian Islands; off the coast of northwestern Germany; and off the coast of southwest Jutland in Denmark. Johannes Phocylides Holwarda
Johannes Phocylides Holwarda (''Jan Fokkesz, Jan Fokker, Johann Holwarda, Johannes Fokkes Holwarda, Jan Fokkens Holwarda, Jan Fokkes van haylen'') (February 19, 1618—January 22, 1651) was a Frisian astronomer, physician, and philosopher. He was a professor of philosophy at the University of Franeker from 1639 to 1651. Born in Holwerd, he is best remembered for his discovery of the length of Mira's (Omicron Ceti's) varying appearance cycle. In a systematic study in 1638, he found that Mira disappeared and reappeared in a varying cycle of about 330 days. Holwarda was also a supporter of "atomism". His ''Philosophia Naturalis, seu Physica Vetus-Nova'', published posthumously in 1651, defines matter and form: matter is extended and divided into atoms while form is the texture of atoms.
