Holmsbu
Holmsbu is a small village located in Viken, Norway. Holmsbu is situated in the municipality of Asker on the west side of the peninsula of Hurumlandet on Drammensfjord. The village had 309 residents as of 1 January 2014. The seaport village was granted city status (''ladested'') in 1847 and lost its status in 1964. Old wooden buildings along the waterfront are largely preserved. The village has attracted both artists and tourists. Holmsbu Bad is a hotel dating back to 1880. The hotel is situated overlooking Holmsbu harbor and Drammensfjorden. Holmsbu Art Gallery (''Holmsbu Billedgalleri'') was designed and constructed during the period 1963 to 1973. The art gallery focuses on the art work of Holmsbu Painters Oluf Wold-Torne (1867–1919), Thorvald Erichsen (1868–1939) and Henrik Sørensen. Thorvald Erichsen (18 July 1868 - 23 December 1939) was a Norwegian Post-Impressionist painter; known primarily for landscapes and still-lifes. Henrik Sørensen
Henrik Sørensen (12 February 1882 – 24 February 1962) was a Norwegian painter. Personal life Sørensen was born in Fryksände in Sweden as a son of Severin Sørensen and Helene Høibraaten. He was married to Gudrun Klewe, and is father of physicist Sven Oluf Sørensen. He was a brother-in-law of composer Halfdan Cleve. Painting career Sørensen studied drawing at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry in Kristiania in 1904 and from 1906 to 1908. He studied with Kristian Zahrtmann in Copenhagen from 1904 to 1905, and became fascinated by the French impressionists while studying at the art school Académie Colarossi in Paris during the autumn of 1905. He studied painting with Henri Matisse in Paris from 1908 to 1910. His breakthrough was the painting ''Svartbækken'' from 1908. Hurumlandet
Hurumlandet is a peninsula in Viken county, Norway. It is situated west of the Oslofjord and east of the Drammensfjord. It comprises the southern parts of the municipality Asker. It is connected to Follo through the subsea Oslofjord Tunnel. Before 1990, Hurumlandet was the planned location for the new Oslo Airport. Ultimately, the airport was allocated to Gardermoen. History Since the Middle Ages, Hurumlandet was a strategic headland at the entrance to the country's capital. Drammensfjord
Drammensfjord ( en, Drammen Fjord) is a fjord in Norway that connects to Ytre Oslofjord on the west side. It stretches to the north and northeast. The Drammenselva river discharges into the head of the fjord. The municipality and city of Drammen which is named after the fjord is also found there. The majority of the fjord is within the county of Buskerud, but in the west and southwest it lies in Vestfold county. The land on the east side of the fjord is called ''Hurumhalvøya'' or the Hurum peninsula; it separates the Drammensfjord from the Oslofjord. Oluf Wold-Torne
Oluf Wold-Torne (7 November 1867 – 19 March 1919) was a Norwegian painter, illustrator, educator and designer. He was known primarily for landscapes and still-lifes and was influenced by Cézanne. Biography He was born in Son (now Vestby), Norway. He was the son of Oluf Emil Wold (1826–67) and Marie Therese Ottesen (1838–193). His father had been in the timber business, but went bankrupt and died before he was born. In 1869 his mother married merchant Søren Thorne (1817-1900). He grew up in the village of Hølen in Akershus where his step-father owned a general store. After displaying some artistic talent, his relatives sent him for his first art lessons at the Royal Drawing School (now Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry) in 1887, under Wilhelm Peters. Viken (county)
Viken is a county under disestablishment in Eastern Norway that was established on 1 January 2020 by the merger of Akershus, Buskerud and Østfold with the addition of three other municipalities. Viken was controversial from the onset, with an approval rating of about 20% in the region, and the merger was resisted by all the three counties. Viken has been compared to gerrymandering. The county executive of Viken determined in 2019, before the merger had taken effect, that the county's disestablishment is its main political goal, and the formal process to dissolve Viken was initiated by the county executive in right after the 2021 Norwegian parliamentary election in which parties seeking to reverse the merger won a majority. The Houen Foundation Award ( no, Houens fonds diplom) is Norway's most important award for architecture. It was established in 1893 by Anton Christian Houen (1823–1894). A successful merchant and businessman, Houen established several philanthropic legacies and funds in culture and research.
