Holmes Lake (New Brunswick)
Holmes Lake is a Canadian lake in Northumberland County, New Brunswick. Holmes Lake is one of several large lakes forming the headwaters of the Little Southwest Miramichi River. It was named in 1884 for the first lumberman who had worked the area The lake was long the exclusive fishery of the Pratt family of New York. After being introduced to the area by longtime guide Henry A. Braithwaite, George Dupont Pratt constructed the log camps at the lake in 1909. Ownership of the camps later passed to his son Sherman Pratt, co-founder of Marineland. The Pratt family leased the fishing rights on this lake and the headwaters of the Little Southwest Miramichi River from the provincial government. Southesk Parish, New Brunswick
Southesk is a civil parish in Northumberland County, New Brunswick, Canada. For governance purposes it is divided between the Indian reserve of Red Bank 4, the incorporated rural community of Miramichi River Valley, and the Greater Miramichi rural district, the last two of which are members of the Greater Miramichi Regional Service Commission. Prior to the 2023 governance reform, all of the parish outside the Indian reserve formed the local service district of the parish of South Esk. Origin of name The parish takes its name from its position relative to Northesk Parish. History Southesk was erected in 1879 from Northesk Parish south of the Northwest Miramichi River and a northwestern line starting at the mouth of the Little Southwest Miramichi River. Northumberland County is located in northeastern New Brunswick, Canada. Geography Northumberland County is covered by thick forests, whose products stimulate the economy. The highest peaks in the province, including Mount Carleton lie in the northwestern corner of the county. The county is dominated by the Miramichi River, world famous for its salmon fishing. Little Southwest Miramichi River
The Little Southwest Miramichi River is a river in Northumberland County, New Brunswick, Canada. In Mi'kmaq it is referred to as "Tooadook". This river has its origins at Gover Lake in the Miramichi Highlands, part of the Appalachian Mountains. The river flows between the Northwest Miramichi River, to its north, and the Renous River to its south. It joins the Northwest Miramichi River at Red Bank, whereas the Renous River joins the Southwest Miramichi River at Renous. The Northwest Miramichi River then joins the Southwest Miramichi River at Newcastle to form the Miramichi River. The river is noted for Atlantic Salmon fishing. Many of the upper and middle stretches of the river are whitewater, and dangerous for canoeing; the lower part of the river is much more commonly canoed. George Dupont Pratt
George Dupont Pratt (August 16, 1869 – January 20, 1935) was an American conservationist, philanthropist, Boy Scout sponsor, big-game hunter and collector of ancient antiquities. Early life Pratt was born on August 16, 1869, and raised in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, New York, the third son of Standard Oil magnate Charles Pratt and his wife Mary Helen Richardson. He was brother to Frederic B. Pratt, Herbert L. Pratt, John Teele Pratt and Harold I. Pratt; and half-brother to Charles Millard Pratt. He graduated from Amherst College in 1893, and "excelled as an athlete". Pratt was a member of the track team, one of Amherst's great teams, who easily won the NEIAA Championship at Worcester, May 28, 1890. In the NEIAA Championship of 1892, he set a new record in the two mile bicycle race. Pratt was also quarterback for the football team. Sherman Pratt (March 22, 1900 – September 14, 1964) was an American sportsman, explorer, and co-founder of Florida's Marineland and the Grenville Baker Boys Club. Early life Pratt was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, the second son of George Dupont Pratt and Helen Deming Sherman. He graduated from Amherst College in 1927, where he played varsity football. Career Pratt had ties to RKO pictures, and produced numerous documentary films. Together with W. Douglas Burden, Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney, and Ilya Tolstoy, he was a co-founder of Marineland of Florida, the world's first oceanarium. He was also a member of the Explorers Club, and the president and founder of the Grenville Baker Boys Club.
