Holmen High School is a high school in Holmen, Wisconsin operated by the Holmen School District. As of 2016, school enrollment was 1,112. The current facility was opened in 1994 and was expanded in 2000. 2020 led to another expansion after the referendum passed in 2019. Holmen High School is a WIAA Division 1 school in sports and is a North Central Association Renaissance School. Academics Holmen High School offers Advanced Placement classes. Holmen High is an NCA/Renaissance School. Holmen is a village in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 10,661 as of the census of 2020. It is part of the La Crosse-Onalaska, WI-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Holmen was settled by Norwegian immigrants in 1862. It was incorporated as a village on May 7, 1946. The community was previously known as Frederickstown, to honor Holmen's blacksmith Frederick Anderson. The name was changed when Charles A. Sjolander opened the post office in September 1875. The name Holmen is a norwegian word and translates to islet (a small island). Geography Holmen contains wooded areas, hills, and bluffs, typical of the Driftless Area, or Coulee Region. WIAA Mississippi Valley Conference
The Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) is a high school athletic conference in southwest Wisconsin. All MVC schools are members of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA), and are located in the La Crosse, Wisconsin metropolitan area. History The MVC was formed in 1989. Onalaska High School is a public high school in Onalaska, Wisconsin, in the Onalaska School District. It had an enrollment of 917 students in grades 9-12 for the 2018–19 school year. History The first public high school in Onalaska was founded in January 1890 on a plot of land between Main, King, Fourth and Fifth Streets. The first graduating class had three students, and the school was known as the Vikings, with the school colors being red and white. The original building burned down in 1895, and a new building was built on-site the following year. After another fire in 1924 left the new building completely destroyed, all students in the Onalaska public school system moved to the former La Crosse County School of Agriculture. The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) is the regulatory body for all high school sports in Wisconsin. Its history dates to 1895, making it the earliest continually existing high school athletic organization in the country.
