Holman Day House
The Holman Day House is a historic house at 2 Goff Street in Auburn, Maine. Built in 1895, it is one of the state's finest examples of Queen Anne architecture, and is further notable as the home of Maine author Holman Day. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Description and history The Day House is set at the northeast corner of Court and Goff Streets, overlooking Auburn's downtown area. It is a -story wood-frame structure, roughly rectangular in plan, with three-story tower at the corner and a two-story wall connecting the main house to a carriage barn. It has a hip roof, with a two-story projecting gable section to the left, and a smaller gable at the front, to the right of the tower. The tower is capped by a conical roof, with swag panels between the levels. Auburn is a city in south-central Maine within the United States. The city serves as the county seat of Androscoggin County. The population was 24,061 at the 2020 census. Auburn and its sister city Lewiston are known locally as the Twin Cities or Lewiston–Auburn (L–A). History The area was originally part of the Pejepscot Purchase, land bought in 1714 by an association of people from Boston and Portsmouth following the Treaty of Portsmouth, which brought peace between the Abenaki Indians and the settlers of present-day Maine. In 1736, however, the Massachusetts General Court granted a large section of the land to veterans of the 1690 Battle of Quebec. Conflicting claims led to prolonged litigation; consequently, settlement was delayed until after the French and Indian Wars. Holman Day
Holman Francis Day (November 6, 1865 – February 19, 1935) was an American author, born at Vassalboro, Maine. The Holman Day House, his home Auburn, Maine, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. His book ''The Rider of the King Log'' was adapted into the 1921 film ''The Rider of the King Log''. His play ''Along Came Ruth'' was adapted into the 1924 film ''Along Came Ruth''. Personal life Day married Helen Gerald, the only daughter of railroad engineer Amos F. Gerald and Caroline W. Rowell. She died in 1902 at the age of 32, and was interred in Maplewood Cemetery in her father's home town of Fairfield, Maine; Day, meanwhile, was buried in Nichols Cemetery in his hometown of Vassalboro, Maine, upon his death in 1935. Career He graduated from Colby College (class of 1887) and in 1889-90 he was managing editor of the publications of the Union Publishing Company in Bangor, Maine.
