The Airborne Toxic Event
The Airborne Toxic Event is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 2006. It consists of Mikel Jollett (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Steven Chen (guitar, keyboards), Adrian Rodriguez (electric bass, backing vocals), Daren Taylor (drums), and Miriam "Mimi" Peschet (backing vocals, violin). Anna Bulbrook (vocals, violin) and Noah Harmon (electric bass) were formerly members of the band. Named after a section in Don DeLillo's novel ''White Noise'', the group is known for its blend of rock music and orchestral arrangements, having performed frequently with the Calder Quartet, a string quartet based in Los Angeles. Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". One of the primary scenes of the movement was Dunedin, where Dunedin sound, a cultural scene based around a convergence of noise pop and jangle became popular among the city's University of Otago, large student population. Mikel Jollett
Mikel Frans Jollett (born May 21, 1974) is an American musician and author. He is best known as the frontman for American indie rock band the Airborne Toxic Event as well as the author of the ''New York Times'' bestselling memoir ''Hollywood Park'' (2020). Early life Jollett was born in Santa Monica in the experimental commune society called Synanon. Until he was five, he and his older brother were raised apart from their parents in Synanon schools. Jollett's father had been incarcerated in Chino State Prison from 1963-1966 prior to joining Synanon where he overcame a heroin addiction. Jollett's mother was a social worker with a master's degree from the University of California, Berkeley, who met Jollett's father in Synanon. When the commune became violent, his mother took him and his brother to live in Oakland and then in Oregon. Jollett eventually moved to live with his father and step mother in Los Angeles, where he attended Westchester High School, graduating with a 4.3 GPA ...
