Holly Society Of America
{{primary sources, date=February 2016 The Holly Society of America is a non-profit organization with a mission to stimulate interest, promote research, and collect and disseminate information about the genus Ilex ( holly). It is located at 309 Buck Street, Millville, New Jersey; despite its name, it represents members from around the world. The society was established in 1947. Today it maintains the authoritative list of registered holly cultivars (as the International Cultivation Registration Authority for cultivated Ilex since 1958), funds research, and publishes the ''Holly Society Journal''. It also provides guidelines for an official Holly Arboretum or Experimental Test Center, and recognizes organizations meeting these guidelines. Genus ( plural genera ) is a taxonomic rank used in the biological classification of extant taxon, living and fossil organisms as well as Virus classification#ICTV classification, viruses. In the hierarchy of biological classification, genus comes above species and below family (taxonomy), family. Cultivar
A cultivar is a type of cultivated plant that people have selected for desired traits and when propagated retain those traits. Methods used to propagate cultivars include: division, root and stem cuttings, offsets, grafting, tissue culture, or carefully controlled seed production. Most cultivars arise from purposeful human manipulation, but some originate from wild plants that have distinctive characteristics. International Cultivation Registration Authority
An International Cultivation Registration Authority (ICRA) is an organization responsible for ensuring that the names of plant cultivars and cultivar groups are defined and not duplicated. The ICRA system was established more 50 years ago, and operates under the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP), which in turn works with the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants. Its chief aim is to prevent duplicated uses of epithets for cultivars and cultivar groups within a defined denomination class (usually a genus), and to ensure that names are in accord with the latest edition of the ICNCP. Each name designation must be formally established by being published in hard copy, with a description in a dated publication. The International Society for Horticultural Science appoints and monitors all ICRAs.
