Holly Park (San Francisco)
Holly Park is a public park in San Francisco, California in the Bernal Heights neighborhood. It is known for excellent views of the city and San Francisco Bay. One of San Francisco's oldest city parks, it was donated to the city in 1862, by James Graham Fair, from a parcel that had been part of the Bernal land grant, also known as the Rancho Rincon de las Salinas y Potrero Viejo. The land was then improved in the 1920s, with help from the city parks department and increased city planning and funding from the 1950s onward. It has walking paths around the summit of Holly Hill, nature walk signs, public art, picnic areas, basketball and tennis courts, gardens, and a children's playground. The kinetic sculpture ''Odonatoa'' by Joyce Hsu is in the park near the playground. Bernal Heights ( ) is a residential neighborhood in southeastern San Francisco, California. The prominent Bernal Heights hill overlooks the San Francisco skyline and features a microwave transmission tower. The nearby Sutro Tower can be seen from the Bernal Heights neighborhood. James Graham Fair
James Graham Fair (December 3, 1831December 28, 1894) was an Irish immigrant to the United States who became a highly successful mining engineer and businessman. His investments in silver mines in Nevada made him a millionaire, and he was one of the famous "Bonanza Kings, silver kings" who became wealthy on the Comstock Lode. Fair later became a real estate investor and railroad builder in California. In 1881, he was elected a United States Senate, United States Senator from Nevada. Rancho Rincon De Las Salinas Y Potrero Viejo
Rancho Rincón de las Salinas y Potrero Viejo was a Mexican land grant, largely within present day southeastern San Francisco, California, and extending to San Mateo County, California . It was given in 1839 by Governor pro tem Manuel Jimeno to José Cornelio Bernal. The grant consisted of two grants - Rincon de las Salinas ("corner of a salty marsh" - around Islais Creek); and Potrero Viejo ("old pasture" - part of Mission Dolores). Rincon de las Salinas encompassed the present day southern San Francisco neighborhoods of Bernal Heights, Excelsior, Crocker-Amazon, and Outer Mission. Potrero Viejo encompassed present day Bayview and Hunters Point. Islais Creek
Islais Creek or Islais Creek Channel (previously known as Du Vrees Creek, Islais Channel and Islais Swamp) is a small creek in San Francisco, California. The name of the creek is derived from a Salinan Native American word "''slay''" or "''islay''", the name for the '' Prunus ilicifolia'' wild cherries. Around the time of the Gold Rush, the area became an industrial hub, and the condition of the creek worsened. After the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the city decided to reclaim the creek using earthquake debris, reducing the waterbody to its present size. Though much of Islais Creek has been converted to an underground culvert, remnants still exist today at both Glen Canyon Park and Third Street.
