Hollenbeck Park
Hollenbeck Park is a city park in the Boyle Heights district of Los Angeles, California. It is located on the corner of Saint Louis and Fourth Streets, near Boyle Avenue. The park features grassy knolls, picnic areas, playgrounds, a skateboard park, and a man-made lake. History Hollenbeck Park has been a lush oasis in the neighborhood since 1892. The park was named for John Edward Hollenbeck (1829-1885), founder of First National Bank, whose widow, along with former L.A. Mayor William Workman, donated of land. In May 1929 the Laurel and Hardy film ''Men O' War'' was filmed here, back when there were still rental boats for the public. In the 1950s, the Golden State Freeway was built against its western boundary. The Detroit Publishing Company was an American photographic publishing firm best known for its large assortment of photochrom color postcards. History The Detroit Publishing Company was started by publisher William A. Livingstone and photographer Edwin H. Husher in the late 19th century as the Detroit Photographic Company, it later became The Detroit Photochrom Company, and it was not until 1905 that the company called itself the Detroit Publishing Company. The company acquired rights to a color printing process developed by Hans Jakob Schmid of Orell Fussli & Company of Switzerland called Photochrom. John Edward Hollenbeck
John Edward Hollenbeck (June 5, 1829 – September 2, 1885) was an American businessman and investor who was involved in the 19th century development of Nicaragua and the city of Los Angeles, California. Early life J. Edward Hollenbeck was born in Hudson, Ohio, and later moved with his parents to Winnebago County, Illinois. He had limited schooling and, in 1846, decided that he did not wish to be a farmer. With his father's permission, the young man left home to make his own way. After doing day labor for traveling funds, he returned to Ohio and apprenticed himself to learn the machinist's trade with Bell and Chamberlain in Cuyahoga Falls. He became master of his trade in three years, but declined to join his employers’ business as a partner. ''Men O' War'' is the third sound film starring Laurel and Hardy, released on June 29, 1929. Plot Stan and Ollie are two sailors on leave who happen upon two attractive girls strolling through a park. The sailors invite the ladies for a soda, but soon realize that they only have enough money for three people. Ollie spends an eternity trying to explain this fact to Stan, who cannot grasp that either he or Ollie will have to forgo a soda. When they finally purchase three sodas, with the plan to share one between Stan and Ollie in which Stan swallows both shares, the price is twice that previously thought.
