Hold (ship)
120px, View of the hold of a container ship A ship's hold or cargo hold is a space for carrying cargo in the ship's compartment. Description Cargo in holds may be either packaged in crates, bales, etc., or unpackaged (bulk cargo). Access to holds is by a large hatch at the top. Ships have had holds for centuries; an alternative way to carry cargo is in standardized shipping containers, which may be loaded into appropriate holds or carried on deck. Holds in older ships were below the orlop deck, the lower part of the interior of a ship's hull, especially when considered as storage space, as for cargo. In later merchant vessels it extended up through the decks to the underside of the weather deck. Some ships have built in cranes and can load and unload their own cargo. Climbing Hold
A climbing hold is a shaped grip that is usually attached to a climbing wall so climbers can grab or step on it. On most walls, climbing holds are arranged in paths, called routes, by specially trained route setters. Climbing holds come in a large array of sizes and shapes to provide different levels of challenge to a climber. Climbing holds are either bolted to a wall via hex-head bolts and existing t-nuts or they are screwed on with several small screws. In extreme cases, concrete anchors may be used (if putting holds on the underside of a bridge, for example). Early materials Rock Early climbing holds were made from real rocks that were cast into concrete blocks; later they were rocks with holes drilled in them so they could be attached to a wall. Trevor Hold
Trevor Hold (21 September 1939 – 28 January 2004) was an English composer, poet and author, best known for his song cycles, many of them setting his own poetry. Biography Born in Northampton, Hold suffered an attack of polio at the age of seven, which affected his left arm. Piano lessons were used as therapy, and this led to an early interest in writing for the piano. He also began writing poetry in his teens. Hold was educated at Northampton Grammar School (1950–57), and went on to study at the University of Nottingham, where he completed a first class honours in music, followed by an MA. He became Head of Music at Market Harborough Grammar School, and from 1963–65 assistant lecturer in music at Aberystwyth University. From there he moved on to a lectureship in music at Liverpool University (1965–70). By this time he was already composing. Marianne Hold
Marianne Hold (15 May 1933 – 11 September 1994) was a German movie actress who became popular in the 1950s and 1960s for her numerous roles in the ''Heimatfilm'' genre—romantic comedy films set in rural, especially Alpine, areas. She served as the inspiration for the female characters created by manga artist Leiji Matsumoto. Biography Born Marianne Weiss in Johannisburg, East Prussia (today Pisz, Poland).
