Hohe Wand (mountain)
The Hohe Wand is a mountain ridge in Lower Austria and is part of the Gutenstein Alps. It lies west of Steinfeld in the Vienna Basin; its highest peak (the Plackles) attains a height of 1,132 m. It is one of Vienna's ''Hausberge''. General It derives its name, which means "High Wall", from the steep rock faces on its south and southeast side. The high plateau is about 8 km long and stretches from the area of the Plackles peak in the southwest to the so-called Wandeck in the northeast. The plateau of the Hohe Wand may be accessed over a toll road built in 1931/32 that branches off the road between Stollhof and Maiersdorf. From 1965 until it was dismantled in 1994 there was also a double chairlift from Grünbach to the ''Plackles'' summit. Easy, but little used, hiking trail runs from the Dürnbach valley, from Grünbach and from the "rear side", from Miesenbach, up the mountain. Gutenstein Alps
The Gutenstein Alps (german: Gutensteiner Alpen) are a mountain range in the Eastern Alps in Central Europe, and the northeasternmost part of the Northern Limestone Alps, reaching heights over 1,000 m. Topography Die Gutenstein Alps are separated in the north from the Vienna Woods by the valleys of the Gölsen and Triesting. In the east they descend to the Vienna Basin. Their boundary with the Rax-Schneeberg Group to the south is formed by the valley of the Sierningbach between Ternitz and Puchberg am Schneeberg, the saddle near the Mamauwiese and the Voisbach and Schwarza valleys. To the west, from the Seebach stream near St. Aegyd am Neuwalde, the boundary with the Türnitz Alps runs along the Unrecht Traisen and the Traisen. Unicorn Cave (Austria)
The Unicorn Cave (german: Einhornhöhle) in Austria is situated in the Hohe Wand Nature Park near Dreistetten in Lower Austria and may be reached on signposted hiking trails in ca. 20 minutes from Dreistetten (typical signpost illustrated). The cave was discovered in 1927 by Otto Langer senior and opened as a show cave in 1930. In 1964 the structures built by Otto Langer junior were modernised. Guided tours that take about 20 minutes are laid on from Easter to the end of September on Sundays and public holidays. Overview The guided tour leads first along an artificially-created gallery into the cave. Its natural entrance is located above the current man-made entrance and is visible from the present-day pathway. A hut has been built in front of the artificial gallery through which the gallery entrance is accessed. The Hohe Wand region comprises a rock formation with its surrounding area, situated on the Hohe Wand mountain in Austria, that is protected as a nature park.
