A hogan ( or ; from Navajo ' ) is the primary, traditional dwelling of the Navajo people. Other traditional structures include the summer shelter, the underground home, and the sweat house. A hogan can be round, cone-shaped, multi-sided, or square; with or without internal posts; timber or stone walls and packed with earth in varying amounts or a bark roof for a summer house, with the door facing east to welcome the rising sun for wealth and good fortune. Today, while some older hogans are now still used as dwellings and others are maintained for ceremonial purposes, new hogans are rarely intended as family dwellings. Traditional structured hogans are also considered pioneers of energy efficient homes. Using packed mud against the entire wood structure, the home was kept cool by natural air ventilation and water sprinkled on the dirt ground inside. USS ''Hogan'' (DD-178/DMS-6) was a in the United States Navy during World War II. Namesake Daniel Hogan entered the Navy on board the schooner at Boston, Massachusetts, in 1811 and transferred to frigate on 18 February 1812. During the War of 1812 he won distinction on board ''Constitution'' in an engagement with the British frigate . When ''Constitution's'' flag was shot away from the main topgallant masthead, Hogan climbed the rigging and lashed the colors to the masthead. This action was to prevent the enemy from thinking ''Constitution'' had struck her colors. In later action between ''Constitution'' and on 3 January 1813 he was severely wounded, losing the fingers of both hands. He died on 1 September 1818. Hogan Preparatory Academy is a charter school at 1221 East Meyer Boulevard in Kansas City, Missouri. Although a public school it is not part of the Kansas City, Missouri School District since it is a charter school. As of March 2022 it had an enrollment of 450 making it the 176th largest high school in Missouri. It has 17 teachers. Hogan Hall
Hogan Hall is a dormitory of Columbia University primarily reserved for fourth-year undergraduate students. The dorm is popular for its suite configurations as well as its central location. Built in 1898 as a nursing home, the building was converted to graduate student housing in 1977. It was named after Frank S. Hogan. It was converted into an undergraduate residence in 1994, then renovated in 2000 with the completion of a new entrance connecting it to Broadway Hall, designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects. Located at the corner of 114th Street and Broadway in the Manhattan neighborhood of Morningside Heights, the building is named for former New York District Attorney Frank Hogan. The Hogan's Fountain Pavilion is a large gazebo and picnic shelter of mid-century modern architecture located in Cherokee Park, Louisville, Kentucky, built in 1965. It is considered the most prominent landmark in Cherokee Park. The pavilion is available for rental for a variety of events. When not rented, the pavilion is freely accessible to all park visitors.
