Hofje Van Noblet
The Hofje van Noblet is a hofje in Haarlem, Netherlands. History It was built in 1761 from the legacy of Leonard Noblet and his sisters Sara en Geertruida. The houses in the hofje are built in the garden of the house of the Noblet family, ''Haerlem en Spaargesigt''. The father of Leonard, Elezar Noblet, bought it in 1737. The Noblet family originally came from Amsterdam. Because Leonard, Sara and Geertruida had no legal heirs, they decided to construct a common last will. They wrote that they wanted to found a hofje, and that the governors of the nearby Hofje van Staats would be the executors of their will. The hofje was built with 20 houses. Ten for women from Haarlem, on the east-side of the hof, and ten for women from Amsterdam, at the west-side. Hofje Van Noblet Entrance
{{inline refs needed, date=May 2012 A hofje (diminutive of 'hof', 'court') is a Dutch word for a courtyard with almshouses around it. Hofjes have existed since the Middle Ages. A hofje provided housing for elderly people (mostly women). They were privately funded, and served as a form of social security. In the Netherlands there are still a number of hofjes in use. Hofjes are usually built in a U-shape with a yard or garden in the middle, and a gate as entrance. The shape of hofjes was most likely inspired by the (older) Begijnenhofjes—groups of small houses inhabited exclusively by religious women. A distinction is usually made between the Begijnenhofjes and 'regular' hofjes. The former were used only by (Catholic) women, who were supporting themselves. They were a kind of cloister. Gerrit Willem Van Oosten De Bruyn
Gerrit Willem van Oosten de Bruyn (17 October 1727 in Amersfoort – 16 July 1797 in Amersfoort), was an 18th-century lawyer from the Northern Netherlands. Biography After he studied law in Utrecht he moved to Haarlem, where he joined several societies and consorted with Pieter Teyler van der Hulst, who appointed him in his testament as member of Teylers Tweede Genootschap. He was an Orangist and during the Orangist uprising he became mayor of Haarlem in 1789 and 1790, but was ousted from the council in 1795 during the French occupation. He published an update of Samuel Ampzing's ''History of Haarlem'' and was a regent of the Hofje van Noblet. He had a summer house in Amersfoort called ''Randenbroek'', which is where he died. Gerrit David Gratama (22 March 1874 – 20 August 1965), was a Dutch artist, writer, and director of the Frans Hals Museum. Johannes Enschedé IV (20 November 1811 in Haarlem –16 August 1878 in Haarlem) was a Haarlem newspaper editor and printer. Biography He was the great-great-grandson of the founder of the Joh. Enschedé company, and the son of Johannes Enschedé III. He studied law in Leiden and returned to become partner in the family company. Antonie Frederik Zürcher (2 January 1825 – 15 April 1876) was a Dutch painter, draughtsman, etcher and art teacher.
