Hofje Codde En Van Beresteijn
The Hofje van Codde en Beresteyn is a hofje in Haarlem, Netherlands. The current building is from 1968 and is located on the J. Cuyperstraat, which is named for the architect who designed the Cathedral of Saint Bavo next door, Joseph Cuypers. This hofje is the wealthiest hofje foundation in Haarlem with the most modern facilities for its inhabitants. Poor (devote) Catholic women of Haarlem 60 years and older are still welcome to live there for free. History of the Hofje van Codde The modern-day Hofje van Codde en Berestijn was built in 1968 on land next to the Cathedral of Saint Bavo, because the original donator, Pieter Jansz Codde, was Catholic and built his hofje next to the former cathedral in Haarlem, the Sint-Bavokerk on the Grote markt in the center of town. Claes van Beresteyn (1627–1684), was a Dutch Golden Age landscape painter who founded a hofje in his hometown of Haarlem. Biography He was born in Haarlem as the youngest of 6 children of the lawyer Paulus van Beresteyn and his third wife Catharina van der Eem.Nieuw Nederlandsch Biografisch Woordenboek, part 10, page 41 His portrait as a child was added to the family portrait in a long swathe of canvas on the right hand side. Haarlem (; predecessor of ''Harlem'' in English) is a city and municipality in the Netherlands. It is the capital of the province of North Holland. The Frans Loenenhofje is a hofje in Haarlem, Netherlands, on the Witte Heren straat. It was named the "Five room" or ''Vijfkamer'' hofje in 1607 after the five new rooms that were built from the proceeds of the will and testament of Frans Loenen (1543–1605). Frans Loenen was a Catholic who fled to Haarlem from Amsterdam in 1578 for their milder disposition toward people of the Old Catholic faith. He left all of his goods to the poor in an extraordinary will drawn up 3 days before he died. His friends gave up trying to sort out his legacy, because most of his property was still located in the Spanish Netherlands, then enemy territory, and some of his money was tied up in outstanding bets. For example, he had bet a small fortune of 16,000 guilders that the siege of Sluis would not last two years. Johan Enschedé Hof
The Johan Enschedé Hof is a hofje in Haarlem, Netherlands, on the Korte Begijnestraat. Via a rear entrance it is linked to the Hofje van Bakenes. Building It was designed and built in 2007 by Joost Swarte and Henk Döll who also collaborated on the Haarlem theater, the Toneelschuur, located around the corner. It was named after Johannes Enschedé III, the man under whom the printing company of the same name grew to be located on this spot. Paulus Van Beresteyn
Paulus van Beresteyn (1582 – 1666), was a Dutch lawyer in Haarlem, known best today for his portrait painted by Frans Hals in 1619. Biography He was a lawyer in Haarlem who lived first on the Wijngaardstraat, and later on the Zijlstraat. He rented the house on the Wijngaardstraat from the heirs of Arnout van Beresteyn (1556-1612), a family relation. During the years 1615-1617 he was commissioner of the court of justice in Haarlem. He first married Elisabeth Sybrands. She died and in 1618 he married a second time to Anna van Steyn, who died less than a year later, probably in childbirth. ''Catharina Both van der Eem'' is a painting by the Dutch Golden Age painter Frans Hals, painted in 1620 and now in Louvre Museum. It is considered a pendant portrait to the ''Portrait of Paulus van Beresteyn'', in the same museum. Painting Similar to Hals' ''Portrait of a Woman Standing'' in Chatsworth House, this woman is wearing a wedding ring on her right forefinger, a figure-eight collar and lace wrist collars with gold bracelets.
