Hoensbroek
Hoensbroek ( li, Gebrook) is a Dutch town in the municipality of Heerlen. It is situated in the southeast of Limburg (Netherlands), Limburg, a province in the southeast of the Netherlands. Until 1982, Hoensbroek was a separate municipality. Hoensbroek is known for its medieval castle, Hoensbroek Castle, Kasteel Hoensbroek, named after Knight Hoen, a member of the Hoen Family. It dates from around 1250. Hoensbroek is also known for the fair on Ascension of Jesus, Ascension Day (Ascension of Jesus, Hemelvaartsdag). The fair brings as many as 100,000 people to the town, every year. In medieval times, the town was known under the name of Gebrook, meaning as much as "Swampy Landscape", and belonged to the Family Hoen. Their family name eventually mingled with the original one, resulting in the name ''Hoensbroeck'' for the location and Van Hoensbroeck as the family name. Hoensbroek Castle
Hoensbroek Castle (Dutch Language, Dutch: Kasteel Hoensbroek) or Gebrook Castle ( nl, Gebrookhoes) is one of the largest castles in the Netherlands. It is situated in Hoensbroek, a town in the province of Limburg (Netherlands), Limburg. This imposing watercastle is known as 'the most lordly stronghold between Rhine and Meuse (river), Meuse'. The oldest part of the castle, notably the tall round tower, dates from around 1360, when it was built by Herman Hoen, though a predecessor to the castle had already existed in the swamp (or ''Gebrook'') the castle was located in. This so-called motte-and-bailey dated from around 1225. In 1250 a fortified manor was built on the location of the present castle. Because of its important strategical location in the Duchy of Brabant, located along important trading routes to Maastricht, Aachen and Cologne, the castle was expanded in several phases, becoming the largest stronghold between the Meuse and the Rhine rivers. Van Hoensbroeck
Van Hoensbroeck (in German: Hoensbroech) is a royal and aristocratic family with medieval origins in the town of Hoensbroek near Heerlen in Limburg, Netherlands. History is the first known ancestor of the family; he was killed in the Battle of Baesweiler in 1371. Heerlen
Heerlen (; li, Heële ) is a city and a municipality in the southeast of the Netherlands. It is the third largest settlement proper in the province of Limburg. Measured as municipality, it is the fourth municipality in the province of Limburg. Egidius Slanghen
Egidius Slanghen (23 August 1820 – 12 October 1882) was the mayor of Hoensbroek (now part of Heerlen) from 11 March 1855 till his death and a historian. Before being mayor of Hoensbroek, he was, thanks to mediation by the count Jean Bapriste d'Ansembourg of Amstenrade, land agent for the frueles of Aldenhoor in Haelen (1845–1853), while in this function his interest for history grow. His first historical account is the work titled ''Het Markgraafschap Hoensbroek'' (1859) (''The Marquessship Hoensbroek'') after that he wrote two books of considerable thickness ''Geschiedenis van het tegenwoordige hertogdom Limburg'' (1865) (''History of the current dutches of Limburg''). Fernando Ricksen
Fernando Jacob Hubertina Henrika Ricksen (27 July 1976 – 18 September 2019) was a Dutch professional footballer who played as a right back and central midfielder. After winning Eerste Divisie titles with Fortuna Sittard and AZ, he joined Rangers for £3.75 million in 2000. In six years with the club from Glasgow, he won two Scottish Premier League titles, two Scottish Cups and three Scottish League Cups. He left in 2006 for Zenit Saint Petersburg, initially on loan, and won honours including the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup in 2008. He was dismissed by Zenit in 2009, and spent the final years of his career back at Fortuna Sittard. Internationally, he earned 12 caps for the Netherlands between 2000 and 2003. Ricksen was elected to Rangers's Hall of Fame in 2014. He suffered from motor neurone disease and died from the disease on 18 September 2019, aged 43. Henk van der Linden (3 May 1925 – 18 December 2021) was a Dutch film director. Early life and career His father was a cinema operator and ran a film rental office in Hoensbroek. Van der Linden made his first film in 1944 at the age of eighteen. In 1952 he made his first real feature film. This film (titled ''Three Boys and a Dog'', Dutch: ''Drie jongens en een hond'') was shot by Van der Linden on 16mm film, without sound. He just made the sound live when showing it in community centers. This film was such a big success that Van der Linden decided to start filming on 35mm. Van der Linden wrote his stories himself and often based them on heroes from literary youth literature: Dik Trom, Sjors & Sjimmie, Pietje Bell and Billy Bunter.
