Evert Hoek FREng (born in 1933 in Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe) is a Zimbabwean-Canadian Mechanical Engineer specialized Geotechnical Engineering and a leading international expert in rock mechanics. Hoek began his research for Rock Mechanics in 1958 (due to problems with brittle rock in deep gold mines in South Africa) and in 1965 at the University of Cape Town PhD (rock fracture under static stress conditions). As a player, he was a goalkeeper for FC Volendam for more than a decade, before going into coaching as an assistant to Louis van Gaal at club sides AFC Ajax, FC Barcelona, FC Bayern Munich and Manchester United, and the Netherlands national team. Martin Hoek (also ''Martinus'') (13 December 1834 in The Hague – 3 September 1873 in Utrecht) was a Dutch astronomer and experimental physicist. He started studying medicine in 1852, but spent his last two years at the University of Leiden in mathematics and physics studying under Frederik Kaiser.
