Hodinkee, stylized as HODINKEE, is a New York City-based watch website, known as an influential editorial and e-commerce site for new and vintage wristwatches. Founded in 2008, the name comes from the Czech and Slovak word for wristwatch, “hodinky”. History Benjamin Clymer started the watch website HODINKEE in 2008. He credited his lifelong passion for watches to his grandfather's Omega Speedmaster that he loved and his grandfather let him wear. Clymer used Google Translate to find the most whimsical translation of "wristwatch" to deal with perceived pretension in the watch industry, and settled on a variation of the Czech/Slovak word for watch, "hodinky". In July 2015, a news aggregation app focused on wristwatches called Watchville merged with HODINKEE, and its internet entrepreneur founder Kevin Rose became the chief executive of HODINKEE. Benjamin "Ben" Clymer (born 1982) is an American businessman known as the executive chairman and founder of Hodinkee, a luxury watch and lifestyle website. He is an authority and influencer in the world of watches. Education and early life Clymer was born in 1982, and grew up in Brighton, New York, a suburb of Rochester, New York. Omega Speedmaster is a line of chronograph wristwatches produced by Omega SA. While chronographs have been around since the late 1800s, Omega first introduced this line of chronographs in 1957. Since then, many different chronograph movements have been marketed under the Speedmaster name. Astronaut Walter Schirra was the first person to wear one in space in 1962 during his Mercury-Atlas 8 mission. The manual winding Speedmaster Professional or "Moonwatch" is the best-known and longest-produced; it was worn during the first American spacewalk as part of NASA's Gemini 4 mission and was the first watch worn by an astronaut walking on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission that 600 million people watched from Earth.
