Hmong Today (television Program)
Hmong Today is a television program that airs on KIFR in Fresno, California. Ben Vue started the television program in 1993. It was the first television channel established to serve the Hmong American community. As of 2003 the program airs on Saturday nights, with 15,000 to 20,000 viewers per airing. Because many Hmong originated from a non-literate culture, television is used to reach many of the Hmong population. The program features interviews with leaders of the Hmong community, news programming, and information for the public good. The program reached its tenth anniversary in June 2003. As part of the anniversary, Vue planned to add new programming catering to young people, including material on civic responsibilities, communication within families, development of leadership skills, and suicides of teenagers. KIFR (channel 49) is a television station in Visalia, California, United States, serving the Fresno area as a Classic Arts Showcase affiliate. The station is owned by Vita Broadcasting. KIFR's studios are located on North Fresno Street near San Joaquin Memorial High School and the Hammond district just north of downtown Fresno, and its transmitter is located on Blue Ridge in rural Tulare County. Prior to its current ownership, channel 49 (as KNXT) was a Catholic television station for the Central Valley. Fresno () is a major city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. It is the county seat of Fresno County and the largest city in the greater Central Valley region. Hmong Americans ( RPA: ''Hmoob Mes Kas'', Pahawh Hmong: "") are Americans of Hmong ancestry. Many Hmong Americans immigrated to the United States as refugees in the late 1970s. Over half of the Hmong population from Laos left the country, or attempted to leave, in 1975, at the culmination of the Laotian Civil War. Thousands of Hmong were evacuated or escaped on their own to Hmong refugee camps in Thailand. About 90% of those who made it to refugee camps in Thailand were ultimately resettled in the United States. The rest, about 8 to 10%, resettled in countries including Canada, France, the Netherlands, and Australia. According to the 2019 American Community Survey by the US Census Bureau, the population count for Hmong Americans was 327,000. KBIF (900 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a World Ethnic format to the Fresno, California, United States, area. The station is currently owned by Cordell Overgaard, through licensee Overgaard Broadcasting LLC. KBIF broadcasts in the Hmong language from Monday to Friday and in Punjabi on Saturday and Sunday. History Early years The Radio Sanger Company, formed by four prominent local farmers, was granted a construction permit by the Federal Communications Commission on March 12, 1947, to build a 1,000-watt, daytime-only radio station to serve nearby Sanger on 900 kHz. The Hmong are a major ethnic group in Fresno, California. The Fresno Hmong community, along with that of Minneapolis/St. Paul, is one of the largest two urban U.S. Hmong communities.
