''Hlas lesa'' (The Voice of the Forest), is a 1935 radio opera in 1 act, H 243 by Bohuslav Martinů.Gramophone review "The Voice of the Forest is a radio opera, also one stage in Martinu's investigation of the evocative power of folk legend and popular theatre. The simple lyricism with off-stage wordless chorus at the outset (reminiscent of Copland's pastoral vein) announces as much; so does the Bride's folksong-like lament that she is being forced into marriage with a man she does not love. She is captured in the forest by some amiable bandits, discovers that the man she does love is another of their captives and contrives to release him. But from the moment she sees him, Martinu's folk-lyricism and modal harmony grow in strength until, alone in the forest with the lover who has still not recognised her, she unbinds his eyes and the music becomes heartfelt, direct and genuinely moving. Bohuslav Martinů
Bohuslav Jan Martinů (; December 8, 1890 – August 28, 1959) was a Czech composer of modern classical music. He wrote 6 symphonies, 15 operas, 14 ballet scores and a large body of orchestral, chamber, vocal and instrumental works. He became a violinist in the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, and briefly studied under Czech composer and violinist Josef Suk. After leaving Czechoslovakia in 1923 for Paris, Martinů deliberately withdrew from the Romantic style in which he had been trained. During the 1920s he experimented with modern French stylistic developments, exemplified by his orchestral works ''Half-time'' and ''La Bagarre''. He also adopted jazz idioms, for instance in his '' Kitchen Revue'' (''Kuchyňská revue''). In the early 1930s he found his main fount for compositional style: neoclassicism, creating textures far denser than those found in composers treating Stravinsky as a model. ''Les larmes du couteau'' in Czech ''Slzy nože'' ('tears of the knife') is a 1928 opera by Bohuslav Martinů. The Gramophone - Volume 77 - Page 118 - 2000 "Les larmes du couteau is a strange surrealist piece (Eleonora is in love with a hanged man; her death - she dies only temporarily - brings him back to life, but he rejects her) but also one of Martinu's most promiscuous flirtations with 1920s modernism.
