Hjo
Hjo () is a Urban areas in Sweden, locality and the seat of Hjo Municipality, Västra Götaland County, Sweden. It had 6,094 inhabitants in 2010. The town is located on the west coast of Vättern. Etymology The place is named after Hjoån 'Hjo river'. The meaning of the river name ''Hjo'' is probably 'muddy'. The way the name is spelled have been changed many times. Some of the previous ways of spelling the name has been Hyo, Hio, Hiyo and Hioo. History Hjo is known to have had a charter as early as 1413. Hjo is, despite its small population, for historical reasons normally still referred to as a Stad (Sweden), ''city''. Statistics Sweden, however, only counts Urban areas of Sweden, localities with more than 10,000 inhabitants as cities. Many wooden towns have suffered fires, but Hjo has been relatively spared, apart from when the church and some adjacent houses burnt down in 1794. Hjo Municipality
Hjo Municipality (''Hjo kommun'') is a municipalities of Sweden, municipality in Västra Götaland County in western Sweden. Its seat is located in the stad (Sweden), city of Hjo. The municipality was created in 1971, when the ''City of Hjo'' was amalgamated with a part of the rural municipality Värsås. In 1974 parts of Fröjered and Fågelås were added. Geography Geographically it is situated by the western shore of Vättern, Lake Vättern. The large and fish-rich waters have been the main influence on the industry. The largest stream, rivulet intersecting the municipality from Vättern is the Hjo River. Parts of it have been made a nature reserve. Partly this is due to the salmon (''brown trout, Salmo trutta'') and the Thymallus thymallus, grayling (''Thymallus thymallus'') that occur natural in the rivulet, but have had hard times due to dams. Estrid Ericson
Estrid Maria Ericson (1894–1981) was a Swedish designer, entrepreneur and founder of the interior decorating company Svenskt Tenn. Biography Estrid Maria Ericson was born in Öregrund but grew up in Hjo by Lake Vättern in Sweden. Her parents ran a hotel, and when died, she and three of her sisters took over the company. When Ericson had graduated by the age of 19, she moved to Stockholm to attend the art school today known as Konstfack. She specialized in pattern making. After working a semester as an arts teacher back in Hjo, Ericson was offered a position at Swedish Handicraft Association, Svenska Slöjdföreningen, an arts and crafts company in Stockholm. She started working at the home and furniture department. From there, Ericson started working as a consultant in home furnishing for her former teacher Elsa Gullberg. Vättern
Vättern ( , ) is the second largest lake by surface area in Sweden, after Vänern, and the sixth largest lake in Europe. It is a long, finger-shaped body of fresh water in south central Sweden, to the southeast of Vänern, pointing at the tip of Scandinavia. Being a deep lake at or below sea level at its deepest point, Vättern is about 1/3 the surface area of Vänern but in spite of this contains roughly 1/2 of its water. Vättern drains into Motala ström through Bråviken into the Baltic Sea, but also has a downstream connection since 1832 through Göta Canal to Vänern and the Kattegat tributary of the Atlantic Ocean. The lake has plenty of sources from rivers and small lakes, with the highest located sources being near Nässjö on the South Swedish Highland near the southeastern shoreline. Nora, Sweden
Nora is a locality and the seat of Nora Municipality, Örebro County, Sweden with 6,526 inhabitants in 2010. History Nora received its charter in 1643. The government had requested the inhabitants of both Nora and the adjacent town Lindesberg to move together into a newly chartered city called Järle. However, the government proved unsuccessful, and instead granted both Nora and Lindesberg independent charters at that year. Many wooden houses built in the 18th and 19th century have been spared from fires and demolition, making the town Nora one of Sweden's best preserved wooden towns. Eksjö and Hjo are two other examples, and they have together with Nora initiated a wooden-town development project. Also part of the old city structure are cobbled streets with small houses and shops by small windling street.
