Hiwan Homestead Museum
The Hiwan Homestead Museum is a historic house museum in Evergreen, Colorado. It is located at 4208 S. Timbervale Drive in Evergreen. History The property was purchased in the late 1880s by Mary Neosho Bailey Williams, widow of General Thomas Williams. The only structure on the property at the time was a hay barn, which Mary and her daughter Josepha hired local carpenter John "Jock" Spence to convert into a three-room cabin, finished in 1893. They named the property Camp Neosho, after Mary's middle name. After Mary passed away in 1914, the Douglases contracted Jock Spence to expand the house to a total of seventeen rooms. The expansion was completed in 1918. The house remained in the ownership of the Williams-Douglas family until Josepha's passing in 1938. The house was sold to the Buchanan family, which used the building as the headquarters for Hiwan Ranch, and their descendants who lived in the home until 1973. Thomas Williams (Union General)
Thomas R. Williams (January 16, 1815 – August 5, 1862) was an antebellum United States Army officer and a brigadier general in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was killed as he commanded the Union troops at the Battle of Baton Rouge. Birth and early years Williams was born in 1815 in Albany, New York. His father was General John R. Williams, the first Mayor of Detroit and prominent military figure in Michigan. His father married his cousin, Mary Mott, of one of Albany's leading families. Williams was the fifth of nine surviving children. Williams' grandfather, Thomas Williams, settled in Detroit in 1765 and the Williams family remained there from that time. Josepha Williams Douglas
Josepha Williams Douglas (1860–1938), also commonly known as Josepha Williams, was a physician and co-operator of the Marquette-Williams Sanitarium in Denver, Colorado. She was one of the first female doctors in the state. She, as well as her mother Mary Neosho Williams, purchased a number of tracts of land in the Evergreen, Colorado area, at least some of which were ultimately donated for the Evergreen Conference District. Douglas was the daughter of Civil War General Thomas Williams and wife of Canon Charles Winfred Douglas, a plainsong musical expert and Episcopalian priest. Frederic Huntington Douglas (born October 29, 1897 in Evergreen, Colorado; died April 23, 1956) also known as Eric Douglas. "was one of the first scholars to recognize the artistic achievements of American Indians as well as the arts of Africa and Oceania." Early life Douglas was the son of Charles Winfred Douglas (1867–1944), a canon in the Episcopal Church, and Josepha Williams Douglas (1860-1938), one of the first female doctors in the state of Colorado. Douglas spent his early years at his family's home in Evergreen, CO, which later became the Hiwan Homestead Museum. Pointed Arch (architecture)
A pointed arch, ogival arch, or Gothic arch is an arch with a pointed crown, whose two curving sides meet at a relatively sharp angle at the top of the arch. This architectural element was particularly important in Gothic architecture. The earliest use of a pointed arch dates back to bronze-age Nippur. As a structural feature, it was first used in Islamic architecture, but in the 12th century it began to be used in France and England as an important structural element, in combination with other elements, such as the rib vault and later the flying buttress. Evans–Elbert Ranch, also called the Elbert-Austin Ranch, was built as a 300-acre family retreat and ranch in Upper Bear Creek near Evergreen in Clear Creek County, Colorado by John Evans, Colorado's second territorial governor. Covering most of Corral Creek, Metz, and Vance valleys, it was a mountain cattle ranch. Anne Evans Mountain Home
Anne Evans Mountain Home is a cabin that was built near Evergreen, Colorado by Anne Evans on the Evans–Elbert Ranch with a view of the Rocky Mountains. It is located in at an elevation of about 8,200 feet the Upper Bear Creek watershed in eastern Clear Creek County, Colorado. Anne Evans chose a location on a hill with views of Mount Evans, named for her father in 1895 and renamed to Mount Blue Sky in 2023. Likely designed initially by Jock Spence, it was built in 1911. It is a "particularly distinguished examples of Colorado mountain cottage. It is built of vertical logs and the foundation was of rustic stone. It was built in a T-shape and was 3,200 square feet.
